Welcome! The Standards Implementation Toolkit is designed to help Colorado educators understand, transition to, and fully implement the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and the Colorado English Language Proficiency (CELP) standards. The new standards were written with a transformational vision and purpose in mind, requiring an intentional and thoughtful approach to implementation in order to achieve the intended outcomes for Colorado’s students and educational system.
The Colorado Department of Education's approach to standards implementation has four phases: awareness and dissemination, transition, implementation, and transformation. During the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years, schools and districts are expected to transition to the new standards, with full implementation occurring by the 2013-14 school year. To this end, CDE will provide tools for each phase of the standards implementation process that will help schools and districts inform Colorado educators about the new standards, and start the process of reviewing, revising, and aligning local standards, curriculum, and instructional practices.
Schools and districts across Colorado are at various stages of the implementation process. The toolkit is designed to provide support in all four phases. While the toolkit is intended to serve as a step-by-step guide to implementing the new standards, school and district leaders should consider and identify their current position in standards implementation, assess their needs for the work moving forward, and subsequently utilize resources on the toolkit that address those needs. The toolkit is divided into four main sections that correspond to CDE’s four phases of standards implementation. Each area includes a description and list of suggested action steps and resources needed to move forward with implementation.
