Comprehensive Health and Physical EducationIn comprehensive health and physical education, relationships and identity are integral to the health and wellness of individuals and the community. A student’s ability to understand their role within the community and the interdependence of members of a group requires the learning of positive social skills. This also requires an understanding of the ways various communities and types of media influence behavior choices.

DanceIn dance, community and identity are established by discerning the intent and purpose of dance and its connection to culture, social rituals, and other art forms. This requires synthesizing the elements, moods and feelings, and meaning found within in a piece. Finding relationships between a dance and its geographical region or cultural roots are examples of understanding the intent of a dance. |

Reading, Writing, and CommunicatingIn reading, writing and communicating, the basis of one’s background knowledge comes from community, relationships, and identity. Participation in collaborative community structures fosters an awareness of the diversity of perspectives. This awareness influences interpretation of text and helps people understand themselves and their community. One’s relationship to a community or an individual helps determine the formality of communication.

Social StudiesIn social studies, a community is partially defined by relationships among members of a group and the ways these relationships define individual identities. Historians examine how groups of people lived, worked, and interacted with each other. Relationships among and within communities serve to identify and describe different types of regions in geography. Economists analyze the concept of exchange between and among communities and the results of these exchanges. Civics provides a framework for analyzing how the common good is balanced by democratic values. The choices people make are often related to how they identify themselves and their membership within and among various communities.

Visual ArtsIn visual arts, there is a strong relationship between the community and works of art. Artists express their intent and purpose through the elements, medium, and visual narrative found within each piece. The intent and purpose, although defined by an individual’s identity, is representative of their relationship and role within their community.

World LanguagesIn world languages, community, relationships and identity integrate all the aspects of the target culture into a coherent view. Relationship insights into the target culture are found in expressive products, and the use and relevance of common daily products. Understanding food and eating practices such as heavy lunch and light dinner, increases the understanding of the target culture’s personal relationships. Understanding relationships among genders or age groups within the target culture aids in the development of polite and appropriate behavior. |
