History of Service-Learning in Colorado

In Colorado, and across the nation, service-learning is gaining strength as a vehicle for promoting youth development, youth engagement, citizenship, and leadership for all youths.

Over the past three years Learn and Serve Colorado has experienced successes in fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering.  Some of our major accomplishments include:

  • In 2007-2008 our local coordinators trained 262 teachers and staff which doubled the number of teachers trained from 2006-2007.
  • The sub-grantees across Colorado reported 147 new community partnerships in 2007-2008 including universities, nonprofits and local businesses.
  • In the 2007-2008 school year our six sub-grantees and their community partners engaged approximately 4,200 students, 57% of which came from disadvantaged backgrounds, in service-learning activities.

2009 ~ Learn and Serve Colorado opened a new grant cycle with a focus on dropout prevention and student reengagement.  Four school-based grants were awarded to expand high-quality service-learning into K-12 schools, particularly those with large numbers of youth in disadvantaged circumstances, as a strategy to improve retention and graduation through increased civic and academic engagement.  This grant cycle represents a time of partnership between existing prevention programs within districts and the pedagogy of service-learning.
