Upcoming UIP Scaffolded Peer Review Session I Open for Registration
The Unified Improvement Planning Fall Training sessions are off to a great start. As a follow up to the UIP Data Narrative (part I) training, CDE is hosting peer review sessions focused on reviewing the first part of the data narrative (including notable trend statements and prioritized performance challenges). CDE staff will be available to provide structured support and your peers will provide feedback on your data narrative. Registration is now open for these half-day peer review sessions in three locations: Pueblo on Sept. 24, Glenwood Springs on Sept. 26, and North Metro Denver on Sept. 28.
These sessions are aimed at local teams as they are in the process of revising and building their UIPs, prior to submission to CDE for review or public posting. Participants will be able to get feedback on their own UIPs and have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on other district/school UIPs. CDE staff familiar with UIP review process will be available at each session to offer feedback and address specific questions. Any school level planning team members are welcome to register as well as district leaders and staff that engage in the improvement planning process. Registration is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012UIPScaffoldedReview.

2012 Online UIP Tutorial Now Available
The 2012 online UIP tutorial is now posted on the Unified Improvement Planning web page, General Resources Page (by clicking the link below). You may also access it directly at http://www.cde.state.co.us/media/training/UIPBasicsNew/player.html.
The 2012 version has been updated to reflect changes made to the UIP template as a result of the Needs Assessment Survey and changes due to the ESEA Waiver. This tutorial provides participants with an overview of unified improvement planning and walks participants through each step of the UIP process. The tutorial is self-paced and can be used as an individual tool or in a group setting. CDE recommends viewing the tutorial in advance of the UIP fall training sessions to become more familiar with the UIP process.
Access the 2012 UIP tutorial as well as other resources for improvement planning, such as the UIP Handbook and Quality Criteria at the link below.

2012-13 Optional Fall Review for Select Districts
As a support for districts on Priority Improvement or Turnaround, CDE is offering an optional review of the district’s revised data narrative (including root cause analysis) for the 2012-13 Unified Improvement Plan. The review is to provide support and feedback sooner in the planning process to ensure that the data narrative is strong as the district makes decisions about action planning.
Plans for the optional fall review are due by Oct. 15 and will be submitted via the Tracker system. This fall submission does not take the place of the required winter submission (due Jan. 15). Only districts with a Priority Improvement or Turnaround plan type will have the option to submit plans for the fall review. Detailed information for submitting plans for review through the Tracker system will be sent to District Tracker contacts as the submission window approaches. An outline of plan submission options and requirements can be found by clicking on the link below. For additional information, contact your assigned performance manager or the Improvement Planning Office.

Important Announcement for all Charter Schools Wishing to Access BEST Funding
An eligible charter school means a charter school that has been chartered for at least five years on the date its authorizer forwards an application for financial assistance to the board on behalf of the charter school.
In addition, a charter school shall notify its authorizer that it intends to apply for financial assistance at least four months prior to the application submission deadline. The charter school shall forward its application for financial assistance to its authorizer, which shall forward the application to the board together with a letter indicating the authorizer's position on the application.
We encourages charter schools to notify their authorizers immediately if they intend to apply for BEST funds even if they aren’t sure at this time. Doing so will ensure the charter school will be eligible to apply when the grant become available.
The deadline for submitting the letter of intent for the BEST FY13-14 Grant Cycle is Oct. 30. Please submit your letter as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline.

Data Pipeline - Project Update
Over the summer CDE has put much effort into designing the Data Pipeline. A quick reference guide that describes the project is available at http://www.cde.state.co.us/rise/ADEReplacement-Rationale.asp
The project has resulted in the restructuring of most of the file layouts for the data collections. As a result, we are ready to present two of the major file layouts to the Educational Data Advisory Committee on Friday, Sept. 7. Following that presentation, the file layouts for student and staff will be posted on the project website. As a side note, we met with Infinite Campus and their response to the file changes is that since Data Pipeline is a state required system the changes needed to the file layouts will be made at no cost to the district. At the end of September, CDE will pilot the directory collection. Four districts will participate in the pilot and results will be shared in mid-October. Please join us for the next Data Pipeline webinar on Thursday, Sept. 27. Check the project website for additional information on monthly webinars and other relevant information.

Autism Level 2 Training: Challenging Behavior, Sept. 20 & 21 in Pueblo
Challenging behavior is often an obstacle that professionals face when working with students with autism. This can make classroom management and individual student management and safety difficult. Participants will practice hypothesizing functions of challenging behavior through video analysis. Alternative behaviors including functionally equivalent behaviors, functionally related behaviors, and coping skills will be identified. Data collection systems for tracking challenging behavior and a “checklist for survival” will be shared. The training will explore evidence-based interventions for challenging behavior, providing practical solutions for the classroom.
This training is offered at no cost by the Exceptional Student Services Unit / Autism team. The challenging behavior training will also be offered in the Metro region on Oct. 10 & 11.
