Making Breakfast a Part of the School Day

Attn: Superintendents

Making breakfast part of the school day is in everyone's best interests. Principals, teachers, parents and children will all benefit from a learning environment where the health and wellbeing of a child is a high priority. Brainstorming ideas on how you and your principals can expand school breakfast program access by offering it in different ways and at different times is the right thing to do for instance - breakfast in the classroom, grab 'n go breakfast or second chance breakfast.

Call the Nutrition and Transportation unit at the number below to request information on how to incorporate different breakfast options.

Prayer Assurance

Attn: Superintendents

Each year the U.S. Department of Education requires states to provide written assurance that districts are fulfilling their responsibilities as outlined in the Guidance on Constitutionally Protected Prayer in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools. These guidelines are included in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Section 9524(b). This states that no local district has a policy that "prevents, or otherwise denies participation in, constitutionally protected prayer in public elementary and secondary schools."

To provide the written certification that your district is in compliance with this requirement simply send an e-mail to Ai Dam (dam_a@cde.state.co.us) that states "Our district, <insert your district name>, is in compliance with Section 9524(b) of ESEA."

In addition to having no policy that interferes with constitutionally protected prayer in school, "in compliance" means your district has received no complaints related to this.

Finally, if it is the case that your district has received a complaint related to Constitutionally Protected Prayer in Public Schools, your district will be in compliance as long as you inform CDE in writing that such a complaint has been lodged. If you have received any complaints related to this, please simply describe that complaint in your e-mail to Ai Dam by Tuesday, September 30, 2008.

Model Content Standards Review Update

Attn: Principals and Superintendents

The Colorado Department of Education's review of the Model Content Standards and work on the SB212 definitions of terms is progressing. Two simultaneous events are occurring in the next two months. This is a brief update:

DEFINITIONS

• SB212 requires Colorado to define 21st century skills, postsecondary readiness, workforce readiness and school readiness.
• These terms will be used by our content subcommittees as they revise the current standards.
• Online survey: Help us define these terms by participating in the online survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=mMm4M3_2b7Rw6S0_2fV7VEJibQ_3d_3d. Deadline is October 10, 2008.
• Regional meetings have been held in 13 cities around the state to gain information not available through online surveys
• Report regarding our findings will be posted on our Web site after the survey closes in October.

APPLICATIONS TO REVIEW THE STANDARDS BY CONTENT AREA

• We are inviting all Coloradoans to apply to review our content standards.
• Deadline has been extended to September 29 to ensure everyone has an opportunity to be at the table.
• Apply at https://forms.cde.state.co.us/cgi-bin/ezs.cgi?DATABASE=modelcontent
• Our subcommittees need to be diverse in content expertise, demographics, ethnicity, and professional sector. We encourage everyone to apply.

Please visit our Web site at the link below for more information regarding these events and continuous updates on the standards review process. You may also send questions or concerns to standards_review_com@cde.state.co.us.
