Announcement
Training for Child Find and Autism Teams on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
Attn: Special Education Directors, Special Education Coordinators, Child Find Team Coordinators, Autism Teams
In an effort to respond to ongoing requests from school districts throughout Colorado, we will be offering two trainings on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) for Autism or Child Find Teams. The purpose of the training is to increase school districts/BOCES capacity for the educational identification of autism.
This instrument was selected because it continues to be regarded as one of the best assessments for the identification of autism when used in the context of a comprehensive evaluation.
This training takes place over four days. Participating teams must commit to attending all four training days which are: Denver Metro training - Oct. 29 & 30, 2009 and April 29 & 30, 2010 Grand Junction training – Nov. 6 & 7, 2009 and May 7 & 8

Does Your District Offer An Online Program?
Attn: Superintendents, Principals, Online Program Directors
Does your district have, or intend to begin, an online program? In order to assure that your program meets the statutory definition of an online program, and qualifies for funding as an online program, please contact the Unit of Online Learning as soon as possible. Any program that designates itself as an online program needs to have verification that it meets the definition of online learning (which includes instruction from a teacher to a student over the internet) in order to meet auditing requirements and qualify for online funding.
If you are offering a single district online program please submit a brief description of your program to shorman_d@cde.state.co.us (unless you have already submitted the description). The description can come from the curriculum director, the program director, or whomever your district decides is the most qualified to accurately describe the structure of your online program. The Unit of Online Learning will review your submission and provide feedback.
In addition, all districts offering an online program are statutorily required to submit an annual report by Monday, Dec. 1, 2009. We will be opening the online data gathering template in the upcoming weeks. In order to utilize the system, you must have current log-in credentials.
All programs currently recognized by CDE will be provided the log-in information.

CDE Content Specialist Online Office Hours
Attn: Superintendents, Curriculum Directors, Curriculum Specialists, Teachers
As part of CDE’s continued efforts to provide service and support to the field, the CDE content specialists will be hosting regular online "office hours" using chat tools and Adobe Connect Pro. The purpose of the office hours is to provide the field with up-to-date information on teaching and learning research and best practices. Each session will have a specific focus and will provide opportunities for teachers to engage in collegial dialogue with their state colleagues. The first office hours will include content specialists in literacy, math, science, social studies and the arts together. It will be focused on the standards revision process and will provide the field with an overview of what educators can expect to see in the revised standards. Educators are invited to join the CDE content specialists for an overview of the content standards revision process on Monday, Sept. 28 from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. for this first set of office hours.
To join this discussion, go to http://cecc.na4.acrobat.com/r65042103/ at 3:15 on Monday. In order to hear the discussion, you will need a speaker or headphones.

Important Information about ARRA Quarterly Reporting Requirements
Attn: Financial Managers for ARRA Program Funds
We recognize that the additional reporting requirements set forth by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are significant and there may be many questions. Please know that CDE is here to support you in that process. To that end, we want to make you aware of the following information:
All subrecipients of ARRA funds are encouraged to complete an initial report on or before Friday, Sept. 25. Only subrecipients of ARRA funds that have actually been reimbursed a portion of those funds are required to submit a monthly report on or before Sept. 25.
The “monthly” report is intended to cover information for the entire grant period, that is all funds received to date from the ARRA program for which the report is being submitted.
Additional guidance and answers to frequently asked questions are available online at the link below.
We will also hold a conference call to review questions on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 1 pm.

Accreditation of Schools
Attn: Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, BOCES Directors, Principals
A few districts have asked about the process for how schools should be accredited this year.
As you know, the Colorado Department of Education accredits each district. School districts will continue to accredit schools.
During the 2009-2010 school year, districts may use the same procedures that they have used in prior years for school accreditation. In accordance with S.B.09-163, CDE and the State Board of Education are developing rules for how districts will be accredited and how school performance will be evaluated. Districts will accredit their schools using criteria that meet or exceed the rigor of the state system for accrediting districts.
The accreditation process for 2010-2011 will include an evaluation of performance on the following indicators:
1) achievement – percent proficient/advanced 2) student longitudinal growth 3) achievement gaps 4) postsecondary readiness
The process will also include a new element of statewide targets for performance on the indicators that will impact districts and schools. These targets will be developed this school year.
Commissioner Jones sent a memo to districts dated July 2, 2009. You can view it at the link below. Again, districts will continue to accredit their own schools using existing practices and procedures for the 2009-2010 school year.
