Commissioner's Appointments to Safety Center's Advisory Board
Attn: All School Safety-Related Personnel
Commissioner Dwight D. Jones has appointed three individuals to the School Safety Resource Center Advisory Board. The center and advisory board were authorized by SB08-001. The bill also identified the appointing authorities for several board positions.
The Commissioner appointed Janelle Krueger, Principal Consultant, to represent the Colorado Department of Education. Janelle has been with the department for 18 years and has been affiliated with the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communties program for the past 10 years.
Mr. George Welsh, superintendent of the Center School District, will represent school administrators.
Ms. Beverly Blagg, a Family Resource Specialist with the East Central BOCES, will represent the professional with expertise in behavior health treatment.
The board will meet again on October 3, 2008 and will have a role in selecting the center's pilot sites.

State Content Standards - Statewide Community Meetings

Eleven regional forums have been scheduled to define 21st century skills, school readiness, postsecondary readiness, and workforce readiness for new state standards.
Community members, parents, educators and students are invited to attend one of 11 community meetings being held around the state during the week of Sept. 15 to gather ideas about definitions which will modernize our states content standards. The meetings will be hosted by the Colorado Department of Education.
Each forum will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
Monday, Sept. 15 Denver School of the Arts Concert Hall, 7111 Montview Blvd. Jefferson County Building, Hearing Room #1, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden Grand Junction Doubletree Hotel, Monument Room, 743 Horizon Dr.
Tuesday, Sept. 16 Colorado Springs Doubletree Hotel, 1775 E Cheyenne Mountain Blvd. Durango; Miller Middle School, 2608 Junction Creek Rd.
Wednesday, Sept. 17 Alamosa School District, Ortega Middle School, 401 Victoria Ave. Fort Collins, Poudre School District, Johannsen Support Services Center, 2407 LaPorte Avenue Castle Rock; Philip S. Miller Library, 100 S. Wilcox
Thursday, September 18 Leadville School District, Lake County High School, 1000 West 4th St. Pueblo West High School, 661 W. Capistrano Ave. Steamboat Springs High School, 45 Maple St.
Two additional meetings will be scheduled in La Junta and Fort Morgan during the week of September 22nd.

Safety Center's Pilot Sites - Notice of Interest Due September 26, 2008

The Colorado Department of Public Safety has announced the recruitment process for selecting its School Safety Resource Center's pilot sites. The sites will receive technical assistance for a two year period to improve school safety. The cover letter and notice of interest may be found at CDE's Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Web page. Look under the subheading "Colorado School Safety Resource Center." The Notice of Interest is due Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.

We need you! CDE is currently accepting applications from Colorado citizens to review our academic standards in Mathematics, Reading & Writing, Music, Theatre, Dance, Visual Arts, Science, Economics & Financial Literacy, Civics, History, Geography, World Language, and Physical Education.
This is an exciting time for education in Colorado and we need the participation of the education community, business leaders, parents, and those who represent content-specific organizations to craft the educational standards for the next generation of students! The new, extended deadline to receive applications is Monday, September 29, 2008.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Notification: Applicants will be notified of their status by Friday, October 24, 2008. Time Commitment: Depending on the content area, we anticipate holding 3 to 5 full-day meetings on Saturdays over the next year. There will also be necessary homework in preparation for each meeting. Meeting dates will be determined once subcommittees are formed. Phase I to begin this fall will include Reading/Writing, Music, Mathematic, and Science. Phase II will begin in January 2009 and includes Civics, History, Geography, Financial Literacy & Economics, Dance, Theatre, and Visual Art. Phase III will begin in March 2009 and will include World Language and Physical Education. Meeting Locations: Meetings will be held statewide based on the level of participation from each region. Locations will be announced once subcommittee members have been selected. Reimbursements: While service on these subcommittees is voluntary, CDE will reimburse subcommittee members for mileage to and from each scheduled meeting.
