END Violence in Your Schools

Attn: Superintendents, School Counselors, Nurses, Principals

This fall the Center on Domestic Violence and School of Education and Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver will launch a new program to enhance the capacity of schools to successfully identify and respond to the needs of children who witness violence in the home. Currently, UCD is looking for schools in the following communities that would like to partner in this innovative program: Greeley, Denver, Aurora, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

The Extend Needed Domestic Violence (END Violence) Resources to School-age Children and Youth Project will serve 25 Colorado public schools where 80 percent or more of the student body receives free or subsidized school lunches. Five domestic violence specialists will be hired to work with schools to:

1) train personnel to identify and respond effectively to child witnesses of domestic violence,
2) increase the availability of relationship violence prevention programs, and
3) assist schools in developing clear response policies and procedures to cases of domestic and dating violence.

The participating schools will start the END Violence program in January 2010. To find out if your school is eligible to participate, call Sam Cole the contact information below. The program is funded by a 22-month grant from the Colorado Department of Human Services.

New Race and Ethnicity Reporting Requirements – Updated and Expanded CDE Web Site and Documentation

Attn: Superintendents, Principals, Data Collection Respondents, Registrars

The U.S. Department of Education has mandated significant changes to the collection and reporting of race and ethnicity information for students and staff. Colorado will implement these changes in the 2010-2011 academic year.

To assist district staff and parents in understanding the new reporting process and the changes to race and ethnicity reporting categories, CDE has created and compiled a comprehensive set of documentation, training presentations and sample forms on the CDE Web site (see link below). The information on this web page has recently been updated and expanded. Among the enhancements, the following five documents are now available in Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, and Russian:

• CDE Race and Ethnicity Brochure
• District Letter to Parents
• Sample Collection Question Format for Students
• How Collected Race and Ethnicity Information will be Reported
• Questions and Answers About the New Changes to Reporting Ethnicity and Race

In addition, CDE staff has created several new documents intended to help district staff maximize responses from parents – particularly parents of Hispanic/Latino students.
