First Annual Art Call Out

Attn: District Arts Coordinators and Instructors

The Colorado Department of Education is pleased to announce its First Annual Art Call-Out!

To encourage and showcase student creativity and imagination as a strategy for educational success, the halls of the Colorado Department of Education’s main building at 201 E. Colfax and the agency’s Web site will become “living museums” of student expression through the visual arts. Staff and visitors will be inspired by a rotating display of student accomplishments in the arts, and will understand the connection between creativity and student success.

The First Annual Art Call-Out window will be open to receive submissions from Tuesday, Sept. 1 until Monday, Oct. 19. The gallery can hold no more than 48 two-dimensional art pieces and 32 three-dimensional art pieces. This means space is limited!

For more information, please review the specifications, tasks and timelines packet found on the web link provided. You may also contact Karol Gates, Content Specialist at the contact information below.

Informational Materials Related to H1N1

Attn: Superintendents, School Nurses

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is taking an active role in educating schools and districts on how to stay healthy. We need your help in spreading the word.

Printed materials are available online from the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

CDPHE also has a variety of samples of informational posters, flyers, flu vaccination stickers and other materials available to you for disseminating H1N1 information to the public.

All these provide important messages and may be posted in offices, hospitals, restrooms, schools, cafeterias, child-care facilities, doctors’ offices, etc.

The information can be customized with your contact information.

For those of you who can download, print and disseminate these materials, CDPHE encourages you to do so.

However, printing costs can be an issue for some organizations, especially smaller local health departments and smaller school districts.

Therefore, CDPHE is providing an order form to request materials. It's possible all orders may not be filled, so please be realistic with requests. Please use the order form provided in the link below. Orders are due by Friday, Sept. 4.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Request for Proposal

Attn: School Districts, Public Schools, BOCES, Institutions of Higher Education, Public or Private Organizations, Non-profit agencies, For-profit corporations, City or County Government Agencies, Faith-based Organizations

The Office of Teaching and Learning has released the new 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Request for Proposal (RFP). This RFP is designed to distribute approximately $7 million dollars to qualified applicants pursuant to Title IV, Part B, of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 to establish or expand community learning centers that provide students with academic enrichment opportunities along with activities designed to complement the students’ regular academic program. Proposed programs must serve students that attend high poverty, low performing schools.

The 21st CCLC program is intended to ensure services provide focus on helping children in high-need schools succeed academically through the application of scientifically based practice and extended learning time by:

• Providing opportunities for academic enrichment, including providing tutorial services to help students (particularly students in high-poverty areas and those who attend low-performing schools) meet state and local student performance standards in core academic subjects such as reading and mathematics;
• Offering students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities, such as youth development activities, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling programs, art, music, and recreation programs, technology education programs, and character education programs, that are designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students; and
• Offering families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for literacy and related educational development.

Proposals are due on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. A variety of technical assistance will be offered to all potential applicants to encourage high quality proposals including Grant Writing Information Sessions in September. Preliminary Survey Regarding Declining Enrollment Districts

Attn: School District Professionals, School District Board Members

The Colorado Department of Education would like to inform you of a study, funded by the legislature and conducted by Pacey Economics Group.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate how declining pupil enrollment in school districts statewide impacts students, especially those that remain in the declining enrollment districts.

The study will examine long term educational and economic impacts associated with current funding formulas and will recommend potential remedies to any negative impacts that declining enrollment may have on the students.

A key part of Pacey's work will be interviews with school district professionals and board members. Many of you can expect to be contacted in the near future to participate in these interviews (in-person, telephone and web-based), but Pacey would value your input now as they develop the survey instrument.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts regarding the key issues on the questionnaire at the link below. Please click on "Declining Enrollment Study" and return you completed questionaire to abutler@paceyecon.com. Surveys are due by Friday, Sept. 4.
