U.S. Department of Education High School Graduation Initiative Grant

CDE is applying for a High School Graduation Initiatives grant with the U.S. Department of Education. CDE invites eligible high schools to be considered for inclusion.
Federal Grant Overview: o Grant period: Five years o Grant amount: Up to $3 million per year o Expected number of grants: 35-50 o Eligible entities: State education agencies and local education agencies targeting schools with event dropout rates that are higher than state rates
o Required elements: Focus on developing early warning systems Collaborations
o Program emphasis: 40 percent on early warning and prevention research-based strategies 60 percent on dropout recovery research-based strategies
CDE’s proposal will include eligible high schools based on the following criteria: -A ninth- through twelfth-grade dropout rate above the 6.4 percent state rate during SY 2007-2008 -An annual student enrollment count of 400 students or more -Schools not currently receiving school improvement or intervention funds from the state -Schools that can demonstrate a readiness to implement a research based framework. Examples of readiness: Work in analyzing relevant student data, commitment to implementing early warning systems in eligible HS, which may include feeder middle school systems - Ability to demonstrate a commitment to re-engage out of school youth
District/BOCES high schools or a consortium of schools that meet the criteria are invited to attend one of the informational webinars on the following dates: Tuesday, July 20, 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 9 a.m.

First Assessment Subcommittee Meeting this Saturday in Pueblo
Attn: Colorado Educators, Administrators, Parents, District Assessment Coordinators
The Assessment Subcommittees will meet on Saturday, July 17 in Pueblo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the first of four meetings scheduled to make recommendations to the Assessment Stakeholders Committee about the design of Colorado’s next generation of student assessment system.
The meeting will take place at Colorado State University – Pueblo, at the Occhiato University Center, 2200 Bonforte Blvd.
The goals of the meeting include: provide background information which lead to the revision of the Colorado Assessment System, understand the structure of the revision process including goals and timelines, identify the key players involved in the assessment system revision and their roles and responsibilities and establish subcommittee norms, goals and specific assessment expectations.
Ninety individuals have been selected from a pool of more than 400 applicants. Each subcommittee will be charged with outlining the design specifications which the state will base its proposal for a new unified assessment system. The five subcommittees will focus on: assessments for school readiness, postsecondary and workforce readiness, formative and interim (ongoing) and summative (CSAP replacement). One subcommittee will also work on new assessments for special populations of students.
S.B. 212 also known as Colorado’s Achievement Plan for kids (CAP4K) calls for the revision of the state’s assessment system. By Dec. 2010, the state board of education will receive recommendations and determine the design of the new system based on the work of the Assessment Stakeholders and its subcommittees.

Two Denver/Colorado Springs metro area in-person AYP trainings have been scheduled for the first week of August.
The Denver metro training will be held at the Adams 12 Training Center on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 8:30 a.m. The Colorado Springs training will be held at the Tesla Opportunity Center on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at 8:30 a.m.
