Announcement

A Remarkable Opportunity For Grades 5-12 To Participate On Final Flight of the Space Shuttle

Attn: Superintendents, Curriculum directors

The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education, a 501c3 non-profit, in partnership with American Aerospace Advisors, just launched the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program.

Middle and high school students compete in a design competition to fly a REAL experiment aboard the last scheduled flight of the space shuttle. The competition is delivered within the context of a district-wide engagement program in STEM education that can reach thousands of your students, their teachers and their families.

The program operates under a critical timeline, meaning that your district needs to explore this opportunity now. The program needs to be implemented at the beginning of the academic year.

Contact Center Director Jeff Goldstein at 301-395-0770 with questions or visit the link below.

C-FIRS Tracker 2010-11

Attn: Superintendents, Federal Program Contacts, Business Directors

On Thursday, July 1 the C-FIRS Tracker System (https://tracker.cde.state.co.us/Tracker/Security/Login.aspx) will automatically default to the 2010-11 school year monitoring instruments.

When a district user logs onto the system, the initial screen will display the 2010-2011 monitoring instruments. Instruments reviewed in the 2009-10 school year will still be available for reference, review or revisions. To access the 2009-10 monitoring instruments within the tracker system, districts will need to select 2009-10 from the pull down menu on the LEA overview page.

OFPA will continue to use tracker in the 2010-11 school year for desk reviews and onsite monitoring. Desk reviews will be conducted in three cycles—
-October, due Friday, Oct. 15;
-January, (Unified Improvement Plan Instrument), due Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011;
-April, due Friday, April 15, 2011.

An extensive document pertaining to the 2010-11 desk review process will be available on OFPA’s Web site by Sunday, August 1, 2010.

Districts scheduled for an onsite monitoring visit in the 2010-11 school year will be notified by Thursday, June 30, 2010. More specific information pertaining to the onsite monitoring process will be released at that time.

Request for Recommendations: State Talent Pool

Attn: Superintendents, District Curriculum and Professional Development Supervisors, Principals

The Colorado Department of Education maintains a file of emerging classroom leaders who are considered distinguished teachers and principals. These educators may be candidates for advisory boards, task forces and special recognition programs. Your recommendations will identify educators who will be of great value to your community and state and who may also ultimately receive prestigious recognition.

We are very fortunate to have a rich base of veteran educators represented in our current talent pool. They have been and continue to be a valuable resource in our state efforts. What is particularly lacking at this time is representation from educators relatively new to the profession who demonstrate unusual instructional and leadership ability. Such persons exhibit strong potential for professional leadership and inspiring presence that impacts students, colleagues and community.

Do you know a relatively new educator that is illustrative not only of our states, but also the nation's best? Whose lessons provide models for others? Who has distinguished him/herself above and beyond established top-quality professionals in many of our schools?

A minimum of five years in education is a must. Candidates are building level personnel. They are typically classroom teachers as opposed to specialists and are recognized by peers and supervisors as unique in their growth. Occasionally a principal or specialist is considered. Previous recognition is not required. In fact, of special interest are educators who are outstanding, but have not received other recognition. Completed recommendations must be submitted by Friday, July 9, 2010.
