Announcement

Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Report Available

Attn: Superintendents, Title IV - part A and other NCLB federal program coordinators

The compiled statewide report for the 2006-07 school year is located in the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities section of the CDE Web site.

Districts that receive "Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities" formula funds report their progress toward the goals stated in their Consolidated Application for Federal Program Funds annually to CDE.

This report has several purposes:

-To showcase efforts to create and maintain safe and civil learning environments.

-To serve as a peer-to-peer networking tool.

-to serve as an accountability measure for the use of tax dollars.

-To maintain an inventory of programs and release results to the public, both of which are required by the NCLB law.

-To answer questions from researchers, school safety and substance abuse prevention advocates and product promoters about the degree to which certain programs are utilized by Colorado schools.

We congratulate the districts on their accomplishments!

Sign Up for the 2nd Annual Colorado Arts Education Summit

Attn: Principals, educators, arts education supporters

On June 7th, teams comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, elected officials, concerned community members and cultural partners from schools and districts across Colorado will gather for a free one-day Colorado Arts Education Summit, hosted by Colorado Council on the Arts and Denver Office of Cultural Affairs.

With strong state leadership and a growing recognition of the importance of arts education to both student success and workforce competitiveness, the summit offers a way for individuals to come together in local teams (of four or more individuals), share ideas and resources, build skills and develop tangible action steps to improve arts education at their schools. On-going financial and tactical support will sustain team efforts beyond the Colorado Arts Education Summit.

The summit site is up and running at the link below and registrations are starting to come in. Reserve your team’s place at the summit while space is still available!

2008 Colorado Model Content Standards Review Update

Attn: Superintendents, principals, staff

The Colorado Department of Education has begun its review of the state model content standards. The process will involve hundreds of Colorado educators at all levels and from all regions of the state. The objective is to revise and update our expectations. In the process, the state standards will be shaped to reflect 21st century skills, college readiness and post-secondary/career readiness needs.

The state has commissioned a neutral, third party research firm to provide us options, definitions, comparisons and analyses. West Ed Laboratory is the contracted support. The gaps and improvements will be discussed and determined with the Colorado field. Our grade level articulation of standards, definitions and recommended improvements will be discussed broadly with pre-school, elementary and secondary leaders, university and business representation.

The calendar of events follows and will be more thoroughly filled in as soon as Senate Bill 212 has completed its course through the general assembly. Soon we will invite membership and representation on all content specific subcommittees. Final recommendations will go to the state board of education for any changes to the current model content standards in all subject areas.

For now, please bookmark the link below for input and news about our collective Colorado discussions to improve the model content standards.

We will be asking you in the months ahead every 10 days or so, to speak up, think with us and contribute to the improvement of our subject-specific expectations.

Thank you in advance for sharing your people, networks and ideas as we talk to each other statewide about the model content standards for our next generation of students.
