Announcement
Additional Training Sessions - Race and Ethnicity Reporting for Students and Staff
Attn: Superintendents, District Registrars, Chief Information Officers, Directors of Enrollment and Local School Board Members
The U.S. Department of Education has mandated significant changes to the process for collecting and reporting race and ethnicity information for students and staff.
Although these changes will not take effect until the 2010-2011 academic year, districts and schools need to begin preparing, allocating resources and addressing related issues now.
CDE originally announced three training sessions along the Front Range. Due to numerous requests from district and BOCES staff, CDE has expanded these trainings to include all regions of the state:
• 1–4 p.m. Thursday, April 30: Lewis-Palmer 38 (Monument) • 1–4 p.m. Tuesday, May 5: Littleton Public Schools • 1–2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6: Falcon 49 (Colorado Springs area) • 1–4 p.m. Thursday, May 7: Weld County 6 (Greeley) • 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Friday, May 8: Adams 50 (Westminster) • 3:30–4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12: Garfield RE-2 (Rifle) • 1–2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13: Delta County 50J (Delta) • 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14: Durango 9-R • 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2: Limon RE-4J • 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4: Rocky Ford R2
CDE also will make a Web-based presentation available by the end of May to assist districts with this transition.
These training sessions will focus on logistical and policy considerations and are intended for senior district staff such as district registrars, directors of enrollment, chief information officers and assistant superintendents. CDE data collection respondents from each district will be provided detailed training regarding the race and ethnicity reporting changes during upcoming collection-specific training sessions.

The Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Higher Education will jointly host a town hall meeting in Steamboat Springs next week as part of the ongoing effort to establish a description of “postsecondary and workforce readiness.”
The meeting will be held from 5–7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 at the Steamboat Grand Hotel, 2300 Mt. Werner Circle.

The town hall forums will focus on such questions as: • What do students need to be workforce ready? • What do students need to be postsecondary ready? • Are there special considerations for the workforce or higher education in your region of the state?

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment - Updated Pandemic Preparedness Guidelines for Educational Institutions
Attn: Superintendents and Health Directors
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is working to enhance Colorado’s pandemic preparedness in coordination with various agencies.
CDPHE staff are currently updating many pieces of Colorado’s Pandemic Preparedness plan, including specific information for educational institutions.
The purpose of this project is to provide streamlined and useful guidance for school districts to assist in improving their crisis management plans as well as to improve Colorado’s pandemic preparedness.
Once the new guidelines are developed, they can be used as a preparedness resource for school districts.
In order to effectively complete this project, representatives from the CDPHE will be contacting by phone selected school districts in the state to simply review what, if any, pandemic planning activities have taken place within your district. This will assist them in revising the current guidelines to be more informative. If districts have not started such preparedness conversations, they are seeking advice on how they can be of better assistance for the future.
Based up input received, the current guidelines will be modified for review prior to completion. The completed guidelines are expected to be delivered to all Colorado school districts at the beginning of the 2009-2010 academic year.
If school districts have written pandemic preparedness plans, comments or suggestions they would like to share, they are asked to send such information to either Kim Coleman (kcoleman@cdphe.state.co.us) or Sarah Meyer (Smeyer@cdphe.state.co.us).
Your participation in this process is greatly appreciated.
