McREL Professional Development Opportunity

Attn: Superintendents, principals and ELA directors

You are invited to participate in a field test involving teacher professional development and materials for students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), is offering schools an opportunity to participate in Harcourt Achieve’s Responsive Instruction for Success in English (RISE) teacher training and receive the On Our Way to English (OWE) supplemental materials.

By participating in the study, schools will receive (free of charge), RISE professional development, valued at approximately $5,000 per school, and OWE materials, valued at approximately $2,500 per classroom.

McREL is now seeking 48 public elementary schools to participate in a two-year field test of RISE and OWE. Eligible schools serve grades one through five, have 20 percent or more Spanish-speaking English Language Learners and have not already used OWE materials or received RISE training. The field test will take place during the 2008-2008 and 2009-2010 school years.

OWE is a comprehensive program for elementary English Language Learners designed as a bridge to the core curriculum. The RISE training shows teachers how to capitalize on the tremendous flexibility of OWE to align with the content and standards being taught in the core curriculum and how to tailor their instruction to address different ability levels and the need for different types of student groupings. Since 2000, about 3,400 schools across the United States have purchased RISE, OWE, or both interventions.

Scholarship Opportunity

Attn: Principals, counselors and superintendents

Each year, CDE supports the United States Senate Youth Program, created in 1962 by the U.S. Senate and sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. The Foundation states, “It is in the public interest to encourage these outstanding young people to continue their educational development.”

The annual United States Senate Youth Program, authorized by Senate Resolution 234, sanctions the selection of 104 student delegates, two from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Office of Dependents Schools (DoDDS). The Hearst Foundation provides each delegate a one-time college scholarship of $5,000 and a one-week all expense paid trip to the nation’s capitol.

The delegates are immersed in Washington activities throughout their weeklong stay, including visits to the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court and the Pentagon.

Each state’s responsibility is to determine their two delegates and two alternates by a competitive process determined by the individual Departments of Education. Colorado’s process is announced in mid-August, following the release of program requirements as determined by the Hearst Foundation.

Each Colorado high school receives posters announcing the program and a copy of the application form. Building principals and counselors receive the information in late August.

We would welcome your assistance in the promotion of this program. Junior and senior students are eligible to apply with the qualification that the student must hold and elective office in an education oriented organization.
