CDE will host a conference call on Thursday, Feb. 11 from 8 to 9 a.m. to provide an update on the implementation of S.B. 09-163 (the Education Accountability Act of 2009) and development of the state’s school performance evaluation framework.
Associate Commissioner Rich Wenning will provide a brief overview of the work underway at the department and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

Save the Date, Feb. 19: Closing the Achievement Gap Winter PLC Conference

Save the date for the Closing the Achievement Gap Winter Professional Learning Community Conference on Friday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Commissioner Jones will open by addressing the vision for closing the achievement gap in Colorado. Bill de la Cruz will lead an interactive session on equity, bias and closing the gap. Recipients of the current CTAG initiative grant will share how they are increasing achievement of targeted groups. David Gonzalez and Angie Zehner will discuss implementing culturally responsive instructional practices and Kandy Cassidy, principal of Prairie Middle School will close the conference by sharing how the administration and staff are rising to the challenge of closing the gap despite the usual barriers.

Colorado Charter Schools Conference on Thursday, Feb. 25
Attn: Superintendents, School Board Members, Charter School Liaisons
The Colorado League of Charter Schools invites charter school authorizers to attend a special three-hour conference from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. This special session is available to authorizers at no cost.
This session is designed to provide best practices, tools and resources to support effective charter school authorizing. Participants will learn more about the National Association of Charter School Authorizers Quality Principles and Standards.
Sample model documents will be shared with attendees including a standard charter school application and contract language. Other topics for the session are the future of charter school authorizing in Colorado including a discussion of Charter 2.0 – an initiative that supports the assurance of quality charter schools and authorizer practices.

National Prevention Research Conference Coming to Denver

The National Prevention Network's annual Prevention Research Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver, from Aug. 31 - Sept. 3.
The NPN is the professional association of state leaders and practitioners who manage federal grant funds from the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The call for proposals is due Monday, Feb. 15. Proposal applications and other conference information can be found at the link below.

The Post-Award Revisions Request system for the 2009-2010 Consolidated Application is now open. You can access that page by logging onto the Consolidated Application for your district and clicking on the link that says “Click here to submit a Consolidated Application Post-Award Revision Request”
Revisions must be submitted before March 31, 2010.

Teachers & Technology Grant Program

Colorado teaches can compete for a share of $150,000 in grants for their technology-related classroom projects for the 2010-2011 school year. The Qwest Foundation's Teachers & Technology grant program will award grants of approximately $5,000 each to Colorado teachers who put today’s technology to use for their students.
Qwest Teachers & Technology grants will be awarded to teachers through a competitive process administered by Public Education & Business Coalition. PreK through twelfth grade teachers with ideas to use technology in the classroom to engage students, enhance their academic performance, and prepare them for life in a technologically advanced world are eligible to apply.
The grant application deadline is Thursday, March 4. Educators can learn more about the project and download applications at the link below.
The funds may be used to purchase supplies or to support professional development needs; funds may not be used to pay salaries or stipends.

Important Due Date
RSA Councils, Budget Revision

According to state board rules 1 CCR 301-76, 2.02, all Regional Service Area Councils need to submit an annual budget statement on or before Monday, March 1, 2010.
Councils that expect to exceed any budget line item by 10 percent from the projected expenditures as specified in the original plan budget submitted to the state board must submit a revised annual budget.
Before expending the funds exceeding the 10 percent limit, the council must receive prior approval from CDE. Submit rationale for budget revisions in a separate e-mail or letter to John Condie, condie_j@cde.state.co.us, 201 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80203.
Budget revisions must be made using the electronic budget form originally submitted to CDE. On the cover sheet page, change it from “original budget” to “revised budget” using the drop down menu. Submit your own budget revision number. Then go to the budget detail page to make proposed changes.
Councils that have an unchanged budget or budget within the 10 percent limit will need to submit a letter stating that the budget was unchanged or was within the 10 percent limit.
