Census in the Schools

Attn: Principals, Superintendents, Curriculum Directors

Preparations for the 2010 Census are vitally important to our state. The counts determine the reapportionment of Congressional seats and the allocation of significant resources. It is important that Colorado be counted. The U.S. Census Bureau has developed a program of lessons and resources for educators. The materials explain the operation and importance of an accurate census, showing students the census is integral to many fundamental concepts of our democracy. Information is available free at the U.S. Census Web site.

To Do

District Parent Involvement Policy

Attn: Title I Contacts

The U.S. Department of Education monitor warns, "It's not enough for your district to create a parent involvement plan if you don't use it and keep it up-to-date."

During a recent visit to New York, federal reviewers cited Buffalo City School District, which had not updated its parental involvement plan since 2005. Section 1118(a)(2)(E) of ESEA requires that each district evaluate the content and effectiveness of its parental involvement policy, with help from district parents.

District administrators should reach out to parents each year through surveys, focus groups or other communications. Consider the following questions:

-How well did parents understand the existing plan and their own rights and responsibilities for their child's education?
-Did more parents -- particularly those from underrepresented groups -- participate in school activities this year than last?
-How well were the plan's activities implemented and how effective did parents find them? Would they suggest any changes?
-How did students perform during the last round of state assessments and what do parents need to help their children in school and at home?
