Pest Tip of the Month: Stinky pests
Attn: Teachers, facility managers
Be on the lookout for a true bug called the brown marmorated stink bug. The adult bug is mottled brownish grey in color, with a “shield” shaped body less than one inch long. It is native to China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan and has become a serious pest of fruit, vegetables and farm crops in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.
In October 2011, the pest was found in a Fort Collins home. The bug becomes a nuisance pest both indoors and out when it is attracted to the outside of buildings on warm fall days in search of protected, overwintering sites.
Mechanical exclusion is the best method to keep stink bugs from entering schools and other buildings. Cracks around windows, doors, siding, utility pipes, behind chimneys, and underneath the wood fascia and other openings should be sealed with good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk.
There are several other nuisance pests that may be confused with BMSB. Insect specimens can be identified at your local CSU Extension office. Send suspected samples of brown marmorated stink bugs to: Whitney Cranshaw, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523-1177. Images of insects suspected of being brown marmorated stink bugs may be sent to Whitney.Cranshaw@ColoState.EDU.
