Improvement Support Partnership Grant RFP Now Available

Attn: Superintendents, District Personnel

The Improvement Support Partnership Grant Request For Proposal (RFP) is now available. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires that states allocate resources for intensive and sustained support to schools and districts designated as in need of improvement. Through the grant, each eligible school/district will receive funds to support a focused approach to improvement in the following areas: Facilitated Data Analysis and Action Planning, Best First Instruction; Leadership; and/or Positive Climate and Culture.

Schools identified for Title I School Improvement, Corrective Action or Restructuring and districts identified for Title I Program Improvement or Corrective Action are eligible. Priority will be given to those with the lowest performance in Academic Achievement, Academic Growth, Academic Growth Gaps, and for high schools, Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness and have had an SST or CADI review within the last four years.

For grant funds to be awarded by February 1, 2012, the 2011-12 UIP must be submitted to the CDE Tracker System by Jan. 4, 2012 at 4 p.m. Please note: this is prior to the State required UIP deadline (Jan. 17) and a condition of this grant. Applicants will not be required to have local board approval/signatures on the UIP by the early submission date.

Approximately $4.8 million is available for distribution to schools and approximately $900,000 is available for distribution to districts. Proposals will be due on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2012. For more information and to access the RFP, please visit the link below.

The BEST Program is Seeking a New Staff Member

Attn: Facility and Operation Managers/Directors

The BEST program is adding a new staff position to help develop technical assistance to school districts and charter schools with new BEST schools and with existing facilities, by providing:
• Warranty follow up;
• Follow up training;
• Operation and maintenance;
• Budgeting for capital renewal;
• Determining if facilities are operating optimally, and if not, assistance with analyzing why and implementing changes;
• Energy management;
• Tools for finding opportunities for cost savings in operations and implementation.

Diagnostic Review Grant RFP Now Available

Attn: Superintendents, District Personnel

The new Diagnostic Review Request For Proposal (RFP) is now available. The Colorado Department of Education has funds to provide planning and appraisal services to eligible Title I schools and districts. Through the grant, eligible schools/districts will receive funds for a facilitated data analysis, a school or district diagnostic team review and assistance with incorporating these reviews in Unified Improvement Planning (UIP).

Schools identified for Title I School Improvement, Corrective Action or Restructuring that have not had a school support team (SST)/CSSI visit in the last four years are eligible. Districts identified for Title I Program Improvement or Corrective Action and that have not had a Comprehensive Appraisal of District Improvement (CADI) visit in the last four years are eligible. Priority will be given to those with the lowest performance in academic achievement, academic growth, academic growth gaps, and for high schools, postsecondary and workforce readiness.

The next meeting of the Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee (CSEAC) will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at the Lowry Conference Center, 1061 Akron Way, Building 697, in Denver.

CSEAC is a state-level committee mandated by federal and state law. Members are interested in the quality of education received by children/youth with disabilities. The committee includes parents of and individuals with disabilities, educational service providers, administrators and representatives from a variety of related agencies. Participation is statewide and representative of diverse disabilities.

Autism Level 2 Training: PRESCHOOL – Friday, Dec. 2

Attn: Special education teachers, general education teachers, speech and language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, paraeducators, consultants, interventionists, administrators.

This one-day workshop is designed for practitioners who work in a school setting with young children who have been identified, diagnosed or suspected as having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Topics to be covered in the training include classroom setup, communication strategies, curricula, scheduling, and use of peers, as well as an examination of evidence-based program models and their components.

Colorado's Comprehensive Health Education Standards: What Do I Do with Them Now?

Attn: Administrators, curriculum specialists, teachers, special educators, counselors, nurses

For the first time ever, Colorado has health education standards. These new standards will prepare students to develop personal responsibility for their health and a lifelong commitment to wellness.

In partnership with CDE and the Colorado Legacy Foundation, RMC Health will be providing trainings that will give participants an understanding of the new Comprehensive Health Education Standards and identify ways to implement them in their school or classrooms.

As a result of this training participants will be able to:
-Articulate the basic format and sections of the Colorado comprehensive health education standards;
-Recognize how the Colorado Comprehensive Health Standards and the National Health Education Standards align;
-Identify tools that can be used to implement the Comprehensive Health Education Standards; and
-Develop an action plan to implement Colorado’s Comprehensive Health Education Standards.

Educational Surrogate Parents Assignments and Responsibilities

Information regarding the assignment of Educational Surrogate Parents (ESPs) has been updated and can be found on the CDE website. Please review the ECEA Rules and the current ESP assignment form for procedures and responsibilities related to contacting CDE, the ESP Registry and assignments of ESPs. Additionally, directors of special education for administrative units and state operated programs must complete the contact authorization form and submit it to CDE if there has been a change in special education director and/or authorized staff in the last year.

Charter School Capital Construction Grant Program Eligibility Questionnaire

Attn: Superintendents, Business Managers, and Charter School Directors

All Colorado school districts and the Charter Schools Institute are required to complete the charter school eligibility questionnaire to allow their charter schools to continue receiving charter school capital construction grant funds. Please complete Form CSCC-02 and return it to the Colorado Department of Education by Friday, Dec. 16.

Original signatures are required from the school district or Charter Schools Institute, and the charter school. Once all the forms are received and the pupil count audits are completed, the remaining Charter School Capital Construction Funding will be distributed based on the new calculated amounts.
