FERPA Guidance for H1N1 Outbreaks
Attn: Superintendents, School Nurses, Student Record Administrators
The U.S. Department of Education has issued guidance under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) concerning the disclosure of personally identifiable information from students’ education records to outside entities when addressing an H1N1 flu outbreak. Understanding how, what and when information can be shared is a critical part of preparedness. The guidance is on the department's Web site at the link below. This Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO) is available to respond to any questions school officials may have about FERPA by e-mail or phone. Additional information and guidance on FERPA is available on FPCO’s Web site at: http://www.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/index.html.
CDE continues to maintain the H1N1 page specifically for schoool-related matters at: http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprevention/H1N1.htm

To Do
Help Colorado Fight the Flu
Attn: Superintendents (please distribute to parents)
One of the best ways to protect our communities this flu season will be to keep our citizens well informed about issues surrounding 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu viruses.
You can play a very important role in the communications effort by taking a survey.
The survey was developed by Kirshner Communications on behalf of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. They will use parent feedback to develop communications that will help people protect themselves against the flu and take care of themselves if they get sick.
Below is a link to the survey. It should take no more than about 10 minutes to complete.
