Announcement
Team Nutrition Training Grant
Attn: Superintendents, Principals, Food Service Directors
The CDE Nutrition Unit was recently awarded the Team Nutrition Training Grant, one of just 19 such grants from the USDA.
With the grant, the CDE Nutrition Unit has established three focus areas to encourage a healthy school environment: • Increasing awareness and participation in the HealthierUS School Challenge • Increasing nutrition education and physical activity in all schools • Providing school level grants to further overall student wellness
CDE urges you and your school community to consider engaging in the HealthierUS School Challenge. The challenge is designed to recognize schools that have created healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity. There are four award levels: bronze, silver, gold, and gold with distinction. Each level receives national recognition and a check! The highest level yields $2,000.
By supporting your schools’ participation in the challenge, you are taking the first step to improving the overall wellness of each and every student. The criteria for the HealthierUS School Challenge is aimed at improving the health of children by improving the quality of food served, providing nutrition education, and providing physical education with opportunities for physical activity.
Let’s work together to make Colorado the first state in the country to have all of its schools receive a HealthierUS School Challenge award!

School Breakfast Challenge
Attn: Principals
This past July, Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr. and Commissioner Jones announced the Colorado School Breakfast Challenge. The top performing schools will receive cash prizes of $5000, $3000, $2000 which can be used at the discretion of the principal. Prizes will be awarded based on the largest improvement from October 2009 to October 2010 in breakfast participation.
