Webcast To Address Bullying Prevention and Resources

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration will host a 60-minute webinar on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at noon (MST) on bullying. The webinar will provide background and tools to effectively train school staff on best practices in bullying prevention and intervention. It will also highlight how to use the Stop Bullying Now! campaign resources.

Assessment Revision Web site and Survey

CDE has begun work to develop a new system of state assessments that will be implemented during the 2011-2012 school year. A Web site regarding the assessment revision process has been set up and several informative documents have been posted.

Posted documents include a timeline for the revision work, a FAQ and upcoming dates for the public tour. In addition, a survey has been provided in order to get public feedback on both the current assessment system, and what potential changes should be considered.

CDE strongly encourages the public to view this Web site and complete the survey, at the link below.

High School Poetry Out Loud Competition

Attn: High School Administrators, Literacy and Theatre Teachers

High School Students can win a $20,000 scholarship in National Poetry Out Loud competition. Poetry Out Loud is a program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

Schools are invited to participate in classroom and school-wide contests, advancing to a state competition on March 9, 2010. The state champion will advance to the National Finals on April 26-27, 2010 in Washington, DC.

Colorado Safe Schools Regional Training - Denver

Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee

The Colorado Special Education Advisory Committee (CSEAC) is looking for new members. Please help spread the word that CSEAC is looking for dedicated people from around Colorado to advise the CDE assistant commissioner and state director of the Exceptional Student Leadership Unit on the issues of special education.

CSEAC is a state level committee mandated by federal and state law. Members are interested in the quality of education received by children/youth with disabilities. The committee includes parents of and individuals with disabilities, educational service providers, administrators and representatives from a variety of related agencies. Participation is statewide and representative of diverse disabilities.

Round Two Of CAP4K Town Hall Meetings Begin in Pueblo Next Week To Discuss School Readiness and Assessments for Grades P-6

The Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Higher Education will jointly host a town hall meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 4 in Pueblo to begin conversations devoted to school readiness and assessments for preschool through grade six.

The meeting will be held at the Pueblo Convention Center, 320 Main St., from 5 to 7 p.m. All educators, students, parents, business and community members and interested citizens are invited to the meetings.

Earlier this year, CDE and the department of higher education conducted a 13-city regional tour that specifically focused on postsecondary and workforce readiness and the skills and competencies Colorado students need to succeed after high school. The second round of the tour will focus on the next phase the Colorado Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K) implementation, redesigning Colorado’s state assessment system.

The tour will be split into two parts, one devoted to school readiness and assessments for preschool through sixth grade and one devoted to postsecondary and workforce readiness and assessments for secondary grades.

Town hall meetings on school readiness and assessments for P-6 grades will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the following dates/locations:
• Tuesday, Jan. 26 in Colorado Springs
• Thursday, Jan. 28 in Ft. Morgan
• Thursday, Feb. 4 in Limon
• Tuesday, Feb. 23 in Cortez
• Wednesday, March 17 in Steamboat Springs
• Wednesday, March 24 in Glenwood Springs

Town hall meetings on postsecondary and workforce readiness and assessments for secondary grades will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the following dates/locations:

• Tuesday, Dec. 15 in Boulder
• Wednesday, Jan. 20 in Denver
• Tuesday, Feb. 16 in Grand Junction
• Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Gunnison
• Wednesday, Feb. 24 in Alamosa
• Wednesday, March 31 in Greeley
• Thursday, March 4 in Pueblo

Colorado Tracker System Update

Thank you to the districts who have submitted their October Monitoring Instrument on the new C-FIRS Tracker System. We appreciate your participation! For those districts that have not yet submitted, please do so as soon as possible. Go to the Web site below to logon to the system.

Please Note: In order to successfully submit the monitoring instrument to CDE, you must designate a District Submitter. Some districts have entered information into the October Monitoring Instrument but have not yet designated a District Submitter; therefore, these submissions are not complete. Please verify whether you have designated a District Submitter to ensure that your submission is complete.

To designate a District Submitter, please follow these directions from the Tracker home page: (1) Click on the green Monitoring tab;
(2) Look at the District Submitters column (Cycle 1-October). Either a name or “Not Assigned” will appear.
(3) Click “Not Assigned” and then Edit District Submitters; and
(4) Assign a Submitter. A submit button will appear.

After submitting the October Instrument, you will receive an e-mail acknowledgement. More information on the Tracker system, including the User’s Guide, is available at the link below.

National Survey Underway to Evaluate the “Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities” Program

One hundred and ten randomly selected schools and the 46 Colorado districts where they are located received a survey in Sept. from Westat, a research contractor of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

The purpose of the survey and study is to assess the quality of prevention activities funded through the Title IV grant program. Three surveys included in the study are to be completed by school personnel, district personnel and staff who have implemented prevention programs. The information collected will be reported to Congress regarding the Government Performance Results Act measures for the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities State Grants Program.

Domestic Violence Expert for Your School - Grant Funded

Attn: Principals, Social Workers, Counselors, Nurses

Schools that would benefit from a part-time Domestic Violence Specialist (at no cost) are invited to apply to the END Violence program. Applications are due by Monday, Nov. 16.

END Violence is an innovative program designed to enhance the capacity of schools to successfully identify and respond to the needs of children who witness violence in the home.

Only 25 schools along the Front Range will be selected for participation in the project. Priority will be given to K-12 schools with a high rate of free and reduced lunch. The assistance will begin in Jan. 2010 and end in mid-2011. The Center on Domestic Violence and School of Education and Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver are administering the program, which is funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Human Services.

Two optional information sessions will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Thursday, Nov. 5 at the University of Colorado Denver. To RSVP for a session or receive an application to participate in END Violence, contact Sam Cole.

gathered in the annual school library survey provides library
professionals with important information for planning, evaluation, and
budgeting, and has been used in studies such as "How School Librarians
Help Kids Achieve Standards" (see http://www.LRS.org/impact.php for more
on this).
