Technical Advisory Panel Meeting

The Technical Advisory Panel for the Colorado Growth Model will hold a meeting to continue discussion on issues related to the development of the School Performance Framework, with particular attention to the measures of academic growth that this framework will include. The TAP meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 23rd from 8 a.m. to noon in room 101 at CDE's main office on 201 E. Colfax Ave. in Denver.

Metro Area Grants Workshop on Education and the Arts

Attn: Superintendents, District Administrators

U.S. Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet along with U.S. Representatives Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis will host a Metro Area Grants Workshop on Education and the Arts on Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 1– 4 p.m.

The workshop will feature information on competitive funding opportunities at the federal level including presentations by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Education.

The workshop will provide school districts, non-profits and educational organizations with a chance to learn more about the research and application process for grants and competitive funding opportunities, view presentations from different state and federal agencies on available grant programs, and understand how congressional offices can provide support in the process.

The meeting will be held at the Front Range Community College in the Rocky Mountain Room, 3645 West 112th Avenue in Westminster, CO 80031.

Breakfast Discussion on How To Turnaround Low-Performing Schools

Attn: Principals and Superintendents

Please join us for a breakfast discussion about innovative ways to improve student achievement and turn around low-performing schools.

We all love success stories. You are invited to hear one! Thomas (Mike) Irvin will be in Denver at the Colorado Science Conference to share the remarkable successes his school continues to experience since he and his faculty took bold and innovative steps to save it. As principal of Oil City Magnet School in Louisiana, he incorporated environmental education to make critical changes to increase learning and motivation.

The breakfast will be held on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, in one of the new health classrooms. Seating is limited to the first 30 people who respond.

Financial Management of Child Nutrition Programs

Attn: Superintendents, Bookkeepers, Child Nutrition Directors

The Child Nutrition Unit is presenting 10 regional sessions of the Financial Management Course for Child Nutrition Program Administrators. This course was developed by the National Food Service Management Institute at the University of Mississippi, and the instructors are former and current Colorado Child Nutrition Directors.

Topics include: effective communication and ethical behavior, development of a financial management information system, financial reporting of revenue and expenditure transactions, setting meal standards for financial management and analysis, managing revenue and expenditures, controlling food and labor costs, financial planning and budget development, developing and analyzing a school nutrition program budget, and tools to analyze the financial status of school nutrition programs.

Assessment Revision Update: First Assessment Stakeholder Committee meeting Oct. 26

Attn: Colorado Educators, Administrators, Parents, District Assessment Coordinators

CDE will hold the first Assessment Stakeholder Committee meeting on Monday, Oct.26, at the Holiday Inn Select in Cherry Creek, 455 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These meetings will follow the same pattern as the Standards Stakeholder Committee; they will be held in public; however, there will not be a public comment section. Questions or comments will be collected from public attendees at the conclusion of the meeting.

The Stakeholder advisory group has been assembled to help frame the issues of the current state assessment system (the Colorado Student Assessment Program or CSAP), identify suggested improvements and guide the work of subcommittee groups. Subcommittees will be created to address formative assessment, school readiness, postsecondary and workforce readiness, summative assessment and the assessments for special populations (English Language Learners and students on an Individualized Education Plan).

Delivery of Final Colorado Standards Recommendations

Attn: Principals, Superintendents (please distribute)

Colorado subcommittee recommendations of revisions to the State Academic Standards are about to be delivered to the state board in the next few weeks.

The status report and a schedule of events follows:

UCLA/CRESST alignment review:
• CRESST returned its review of the subcommittee revisions in math, science, and reading/writing and communicating. Only minor edits were recommended
• CRESST submitted its review to social studies subcommittee members yesterday. Overall, very positive comments. Edits provided.
• CRESST will submit arts and health/PE and world language alignment reviews and are due Friday, Oct. 23

Delivery of Subcommittee recommendations:
• The subcommittee’s job is to create the revisions using benchmarked materials and their best professional background. Co-chairs are the leaders who bring consensus recommendations to CDE.
• Math, science, and reading/writing and communicating’s recommendation will be received by CDE on Wednesday
• Social studies will be received by CDE on Friday
• Arts, PE/health, and world languages will be received by CDE on Sunday, Nov. 1

Professional Copy Editing
• Schoolhouse Communications and WestEd will be giving the subcommittee’s recommendation a finished look
• This will not be a conceptual change, but will address clearer examples, spelling errors and format
• Friday, Nov. 6 will be their deadline for making this document look professional

State Board of Education Receives the Recommendations
• CDE gives the state board recommendations on Wednesday, Nov. 11
• The date for public comment is still pending
• The state board of education will adopt revised standards on Thursday, Dec. 10
