2010 Census
Attn: Superintendents
The next major U.S. Census will happen in April, 2010. Are you aware of the impact it can have on your school and community?
By encouraging your community to participate in the 2010 census, you will help your school receive the money it deserves. The confidential information collected through the census is used to determine how much money schools in your district will receive.
What is the census? The census is an anonymous process that gathers information to:
-assist with funding for school districts -provide information that supports unemployment and Medicare -help distribute federal and state funds -learn how society is changing and growing
You may want to begin communicating about the 2010 census with your community now.

Federal Programs
2009-2010 NCLB Consolidated Application Updates
Attn: Federal Program and Consolidated Application Contacts
The Office of Federal Program Administration is working on the 2009-2010 Consolidated Application. The overall format of the online application will be the same as in years past; however, some changes will be made to the program narrative. Rather than being structured by individual needs, each program narrative will include a series of required elements, or program-specific questions that will need to be addressed. Each Title program has developed a rubric for the application narrative. The rubric will cover all of the required elements and give specific guidance on what is necessary for applications to be approved. A draft of these rubrics will be available soon.
We are very aware of the current budget restrictions facing the state and many districts; therefore, we will be trying to reduce the travel burden on districts this year. Instead of asking districts to travel for training, we will be hosting a series of webinar trainings on the 09-10 application beginning in March. These webinars will provide an overview of the application requirements, deadlines, and the new structure of the narrative section. Each webinar will be from 9 to 11 a.m. The tentative dates for these webinars are: March 18, 19, 25, and 26. More information, including how to register, will be available soon.
In addition, we will provide resources on our Web site, including a walk-through of the application and ARAC form. We will provide additional program-specific webinars as necessary. As always, we are available by phone and e-mail to answer any questions you may have. The Helpline will be available again this year once the online application is live. Districts experiencing difficulty with their application should feel free to contact us for assistance.
