Announcement

RtI Problem-Solving Consultation Online Module Registration

Attn: All

This module targets the problem-solving that occurs at the individual student level utilizing the consultant model to gain information and to support classroom teachers and parents throughout the problem-solving process.

The online version allows for direct application to your setting with ongoing feedback. We are hopeful that it will be a more convenient and supportive way to get the information versus the typical face-to-face professional development. We will offer two concurrent sessions from Monday, Jan. 26 - Friday, March 6. The parameters about registration are as follows:

1. Only teams from districts or schools can register.

2. A team must be a minimum of three people and no more than 10.

3. The team must be one that is currently working together in a district or building.

4. There will be one user name assigned per team. Only 60 teams will be allowed to register.

5. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and will be cut off after the first 60 teams have registered. This course will be repeated two more times this spring if you do not get in.

6. There will be one team member designated as the primary contact.

7. Credit options are currently being worked out and will be available.

The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 23. Registration information can be located on the RtI Web site under "Professional Development."

Future course dates are Monday, March 9 - Friday, April 17 (60 teams) and Monday, April 27 - Friday, June 5 (60 teams).

Town Hall Meeting in Denver Tuesday, Jan. 27 on Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness

Attn: All members of the education and greater community

Please distribute the following information as widely as possible:

The Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Department of Higher Education will jointly host a town hall meeting in Denver on Tuesday, Jan. 27 as part of the ongoing effort to establish a description of “postsecondary and workforce readiness.”

The meeting will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Turnhalle Ballroom in the Tivoli Student Union on the Auraria Campus, 900 Auraria Parkway in Denver.

Educators, students, parents, business and community members and interested citizens are invited to the meeting, which will be facilitated by David Skaggs, Executive Director of the Department of Higher Education.

The gathering in Denver will be the third of 12 statewide meetings planned to solicit a broad spectrum of community thinking. The work was launched by Senate Bill 08-212, the “Preschool to Postsecondary Education Alignment Act” also known as the Colorado Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K).

The town hall forums will focus on such questions as:

• What do students need to be workforce ready?

• What do students need to be postsecondary ready?

• Are there special considerations for the workforce or higher education in your region of the state?

Please contact Samantha Long, S.B. 212 project manager, with any questions, and feel free to share this event with others you think might be interested. We hope you will be able to join us in this important conversation.

Desk Monitoring Cancelled For This Year

Attn: Title I, Title II, Human Resource and Application Contacts

We will not be conducting a desk monitoring of principal attestations and annual reports this year.

As some of you may be aware, CDE is in the process of developing a new online monitoring system in conjunction with WestEd and the Southwest Comprehensive Center. We are still in the process of developing and testing this new system so that it will be available for district use next fall. This new system will make it much easier for districts to submit information to CDE. In light of this, we have decided to delay desk monitoring until the new system is available. We will provide more information on the new system in the next couple of months. But for now, you can at least take this one item off of your to-do list.

Thanks to those of you who submitted these already. Remember, while we may not be collecting these items for a desk review this year, it is still a requirement that districts must meet each year. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Model Content Standards Review Update

Attn: All (please distribute)

The Colorado Department of Education's review of the Model Content Standards is progressing. The conversations at both the CDE Standards Review Stakeholder meeting on December 15 in Colorado Springs and at the January 14 State Board of Education meeting were consistent in the notion to propose grade by grade articulation from preschool to eighth grade. Additionally, it was agreed that some type of more specific high school bundling of content standards is in order. Exactly how that organization is made is still pending.

The other mutual agreements expect that Colorado's new standards should be fewer in number, clearer in intentions and higher in expections. Also, the standards are to incorporate 21st century skills and postsecondary and workforce readiness indicators.

The first round of content area review subcommittees (math, science, reading/writing, music) are in place and beginning their work. Cities and dates of these meetings are on the CDE Web page. Specific locations and agendas for the next 90 days will be announced next week for this first phase of the review.
