Educational Identification of ASD: Why Identify Autism Spectrum Disorders in our Schools?

2/11/2013 - 2/11/2013
8:00:00 AM - 3:30:00 PM

This training is for Child Find and evaluation teams assessing children birth to 21 who are new to the process or just thinking about educationally identifying young children and youth who are suspected of having an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Hear from the experiences of school district and BOCES teams who have been evaluating students and making the determination of eligibility based on an Autism Spectrum Disorder for several years. The new Colorado disability category of Autism Spectrum Disorders and definition will be discussed, and Colorado’s Guidance for Educational Identification of Autism Spectrum Disorders manual, which was co-authored by JFK Partners and the Colorado Department of Education, will be introduced. Differentiating between ASD and other similar disabilities and co-occurring disabilities will be discussed, including traumatic brain injuries and Colorado’s new eligibility criteria. Attendees are encouraged to come in teams. In the afternoon, participants will choose between attending the session for teams assessing children birth to 5 years old or the session for teams evaluating 6-21 year olds. Level 1 and 2 screenings and assessments, including what to do if you don’t administer the ADOS, and the process leading to an educational determination for the respective age groups will be discussed.
