Standards Glossary
The purpose of this glossary is to help the user better understand the terminology used in the Colorado Academic Standards. It is intended to assist educational practitioners and pre-service educators in understanding the standards. It is not intended as a study guide for students nor does it represent a comprehensive list of all academic terms.

- harassment
Any written or verbal expression, or physical or electronic or gesture, or pattern thereof, that is intended to coerce, intimidate, or cause any physical, mental, or emotional harm to any student. Behaviors include but are not limited to those discriminating on the basis of academic performance, disability, race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, ancestry, or need for special education services. - harmony
The simultaneous combination of two or more pitches.

A principle of design of visual arts. The creation of unity through the use of stressing similarities of separate but related parts of the artwork.

- hate crime
The violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation or identification, disability, or other individuality.

- hazing
Any activity expected of someone joining or maintaining full status in a group that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate.

- health
A state of complete physical, social, mental, and emotional well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity; a functional state which allows a person to achieve goals and activities for a productive and satisfying life.

The content of communications derived from credible sources related to individual, group, and community health issues and concerns.

- health outcome
The result of health and lifestyle choices; a measurable change in or reinforcement of factors related to health status or quality of life attributable to a series of events, whether planned or unplanned.

- health promotion
Any planned combination of educational, political, environmental, regulatory, or organizational mechanisms, that support actions and conditions of living conducive to improving the health of individuals, groups, and communities.

- health-related fitness
Fitness that is focused on the goals of enhanced wellness, increased longevity, and prevention of hypokinetic disease. Components include aerobic capacity, body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, muscle endurance, and muscle strength.

- healthy diet
A selection of food and drink that emphasizes a balanced caloric intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

- healthy lifestyle
Patterns of behavior which maximize quality of life and decrease susceptibility to negative health outcomes.

- healthy relationship
A relationship based on cooperation, respect, personal empowerment, resisting inappropriate social pressure, preventing, managing, and resolving interpersonal conflict, and seeking help when needed.

- hemisphere
Half of a globe or Earth.

- heritage speaker
A person who speaks the target language at some degree of proficiency at home or with certain family members, but who has not formally learned the language in a an academic setting. See also: native speaker.

- high-frequency phrases
Words and phrases used most often in speaking and writing.

- high-pitch wave
A wave with a shorter wavelength and higher frequency of sound.

- histogram
A one-variable data display that uses bins to show the distribution of values in the data set. Each bin corresponds to an interval of data values; the height of a bin indicates the number, or frequency, of values in that interval.

- historical
Refers to what is concerned with history. Having importance or influence on history.

- historical and cultural traditions
Styles of social and artistic expression unique to a particular community of people that have been inherited or established and serve as a vehicle to promote cultural continuity.

- historical argument
Not simply a statement of opinion but an attempt to give reasons for holding certain opinions based on factual information.

- historical context
The political, social, cultural, and economic setting for a particular idea or event.

- historical inquiry
The process of studying history to find out what, who, why, when, etc., in a logical, problem-solving manner.

May include documents, pictures, sound recordings, interviews, text and other media.

- HIV
Human Immunodeficiency Virus; a retrovirus that is recognized as the causative agent of AIDS, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

- human features
A building, structure, or other impact on the physical environment created by humans.

- human resource
Workers or labor resources.

- human systems
A collection of human features that are linked and interrelated: a city, an airport, or a transportation network.

- hydrosphere
The watery layer of Earth's surface; includes water vapor.

- hypothesis
A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation.

Develop a tentative explanation for a set of observations or relationships, testable through additional observations or experiments.
