Getting Started with PBIS

Training Components

CDE will facilitate training and technical assistance to support the implementation of PBIS practices throughout the state. Training will assist school-based teams in planning, developing, and implementing action steps to establish and maintain effective school environments that exhibit:

  • a common approach to discipline
  • positively stated expectations for all students and staff
  • procedures for teaching these expectations to students
  • a continuum of supports for encouraging demonstration and maintenance of these expectations
  • a continuum of procedures for discouraging rule-violating behavior
  • procedures for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the discipline system on a regular and frequent basis
  • methods for involving families and communities

PBIS Implementation

PBIS District Implementation

  • Establish District Leadership Team (DLT)
  • Work with the Colorado PBIS Coordinator & regional Implementation Consultant (IC) on District Checklist
  • District and building level administration attends administration webinar on Colorado PBIS implementation
  • District begins completion of readiness checklists, data collection, and data audit
  • Sign Partnership Documents with Colorado PBIS coordinator and/or IC
  • Get administration buy-in and support at implementing sites
  • Establish staff agreements, building checklist, and building data collection and analysis
  • Build working knowledge & capacity of PBIS practices & systems at building level
  • Develop individualized action plan for PBIS
  • Establish building level team and assign roles
  • Get organized (determine which projects can be eliminated)
  • Sign up for the next CDE sponsored training 

Colorado PBIS Fast Facts

  • Colorado PBIS has been training districts (with signed agreements) since its inception in this state during the 2002-03 school-year.
  • Over this time, we have trained 742 schools in 70 school districts and facilities.
  • We have an ever evolving implementation process. This process is based upon data and research that is collected and analyzed at the state and national level.
  • We have an implementation process because PBIS is not a program.
    • Rather, it is a system based work that is built upon best practice instructional systems, behavior systems, and systems change.
    • It takes time and people to implement with fidelity.
    • The greatest outcomes for students and staff come with fidelity of implementation.
  • Part of the process of implementation is district level and building level commitment documents (I have attached these documents to this email).
  • Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to train single schools at a time.
  • Districts that have committed to implementation (commitment includes but is not limited to providing PBIS coaching, release time of staff, and utilizing best practice behavior progress monitoring (SWIS) are then given direction around the next available training.
  • New Team PBIS Universal training is a training that lasts four days.
    • The first two days are back-to-back and involve kick starting a school's PBIS planning and implementation.
    • The third day is completed two to four months later and involves a review of the philosophy behind PBIS as well as planning time with the systems, data, practices, and outcomes involved with universal implementation.
    • The fourth day is PBIS in the classroom.
  • It is imperative that the same, complete team attends each of these training days.
  • All of the trainings and implementation processes are derived from data and research on helping districts and schools implement PBIS with fidelity and sustainability.
