Colorado Literacy
Welcome to Colorado Literacy
The Colorado Department of Education embraces the importance of literacy, a gateway skill that opens the door to accessing information throughout life. Good early literacy instruction provides a foundation but is not the complete structure for developing competent readers who are prepared for post-secondary education and workforce readiness.
The Office of Colorado Literacy is moving beyond the customary focus on reading instruction to a broader vision of literacy development in K-12. The work, accomplished in partnerships with teachers and administrators, involves improving policy and practice. The tasks include developing a common goal, rigorous standards, and professional development.
Recent research reflects a consensus around the evidence-based practices that have a high likelihood of leading students to success in mastering the reading process. Effective literacy instruction includes:
- Teachers with extensive knowledge of literacy research and proven practices.
- Continually monitoring the progress of individual students.
- Consistently re-evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of current programs and practices.
- Explicit instruction in reading and writing through grade 12.
Teaching literacy is essential for preparing students for post-secondary education and the twenty-first century workplace. For this reason, the Department of Education has made literacy the primary goal for all Colorado students.
