Name: Christine Hagge, Counselor

School: PSD Global Academy

Description:

Chris Hagge a.k.a. “Ms. Chris” has been a counselor at PSD Global Academy (PGA) for 3 years. During her time with PGA, her collaborative efforts with staff in creating additional interventions have resulted in the school’s dropout rate being cut in half since 2011-12. The school’s ‘F’ rate has also been cut by 50% since 2011-12 and due to the greater focus on attendance and individualized interventions, the school’s truancy rate has declined by 42% from October 2012 to February 2013. Additionally, Ms. Chris has had 100% of her Gifted and Talented students complete their ALP (Advanced Learning Plan) goals all three years and 100% of her concurrent enrollment students approved for and complete their college courses. Ms. Chris utilizes data analysis to lead her program and improvement planning; when student attendance data dip, Ms. Chris focuses on engagement strategies such as social events, community services, and academic incentives. The school found that on-campus activities as well as field trips lead to better student engagement and connection to the school, which leads to increased attendance and achievement in online classes. The students who attended the on-site enrichment classes and clubs were 7 times more likely to succeed in their online courses. Ms. Chris also leads an online advisory course for seniors, which promotes strong attendance and progress, positive community and culture and a connection to the school for online students. In student surveys, Ms. Chris consistently receives the highest ranking from students in grades 6-12. Ms. Chris is not only respected but also well-liked by her colleagues as she is always quick with a joke, a pleasure to work with and brings both empathy and levity to the workplace.

Name: Rochelle Kolhouse, Teacher

School: Falcon Virtual Academy

Description:

Rochelle Kolhouse has been a teacher at Falcon Virtual Academy (FVA) for 3 years. Rochelle is responsible for teaching all of the school’s high school science courses. Under Rochelle’s instructional leadership, Falcon Virtual Academy’s science program has demonstrated tremendous growth. FVA’s 2011-12 10th grade science TCAP scores showed a 14% decrease in the number of students in the unsatisfactory range. FVA also increased the number of students scoring proficient and advanced by 18% over the two-year span. In addition, during the first semester of implementation of a brand new freshman physics class, 92% of students passed the class despite the increased level of rigor due to Rochelle’s revamping of the curriculum.
