Aetna 2018 Cultivating Healthy Communities Grant Program

Aetna Foundation is inviting projects that address issues in the following domains to apply for the 2018 Cultivating Healthy Communities Grant: Built Environment, Community Safety, Environmental Exposures, Healthy Behaviors, and Social/Economic Factors. This is a two-stage application process, deadline for submitting stage one applications is Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 3 p.m. (ET). Learn more here

Rural Development Community Facilities Direct Loan and  Grant Program 

Rural Development Community Facilities Direct Loan and  Grant Program provides affordable funding through a competitive process to develop essential community facilities in rural areas, including  local food systems such as community gardens, food pantries, community kitchens, food banks, food hubs or greenhouses. Applications are accepted year-round, on a rolling basis. Contact the Colorado Rural Development Office for more information.

Food Research & Action Center (FRAC)

FRAC has released the Afterschool Suppers: A Snapshot of Participation: 2018 Afterschool Nutrition Report, showing participation data in afterschool nutrition programs, which play a key role in reducing hunger and supporting quality afterschool enrichment programs.

  • Nationwide, nearly 1.1 million low-income children benefited from afterschool suppers in October 2016, up from the 200,000 in October 2011.This report sets the goal of reaching 15 children with the Afterschool Supper Program, for every 100 low-income children participating in school lunch, per state.
  • This report identifies and describes effective strategies for increasing participation in the afterschool nutrition programs.

How does Colorado measure up?

  • Afterschool Average Daily Participation (ADP) in National School Lunch Program (NSLP) snacks increased 13.8 percent, from October 2015 to October 2016;  the national average was 0.4  percent change.
  • Increased number of NSLP snacks served from October 2015 to October 2016 by 6.9 percent, from 178,660 in October 2015 to 191,005 in October 2016;  the national average was -7.4 percent change.

School Food Institute - Free Online Courses for Colorado School Food Service Staff

  • School Food Institute, an Initiative of the Chef Ann Foundation, offers a series of online courses, taught by Chef Ann Cooper.
  • These courses cover key areas of school food, from procurement and finance to menus and marketing, with a focus on scratch cooking.
  • Courses are offered at no charge to Colorado school food service staff, thanks to support from The Colorado Health Foundation.
