News Release - Colorado Springs teacher named Colorado Teacher of the Year

Colorado Springs teacher named Colorado Teacher of the Year

Interim Education Commissioner Katy Anthes announced today that Sean Wybrant, a Career and Technical Education teacher at William J. Palmer High School, Colorado Springs School District 11, is the 2017 Colorado Teacher of the Year.

As the new Teacher of the Year, Wybrant will become Colorado’s nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition.  He will get many professional development opportunities through the National Teacher of the Year program and will get to attend a ceremony at the White House and go to Space Camp for a week.

Wybrant was selected for the honor based on his dedication and commitment to providing students with impactful and real-world educational experiences and opportunities.  His work has led to groundbreaking technologies being infused into his classroom, including augmented reality, virtual reality, live action motion capture and robotics, among others. He demonstrates excellence in all levels and generates respect from his students, colleagues, parents and administrators.

“Sean Wybrant is an excellent model for teachers across the state,” said Colorado’s interim Education Commissioner Katy Anthes. “He has a special way of engaging students in meaningful projects that helps bring learning to life. And we love the fact that he became a teacher to change the world. With his dedication and encouragement, he will surely inspire many to do just that.”

Adams State University, University of Northern Colorado, Colorado Education Association, Colorado Regional Business Alliance, and Colorado Free Masons provided sponsorship for the award. In addition, Vectra Bank, Rutledge’s, and the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership participated as local sponsors.

Dr. Nicholas Gledich, superintendent of Colorado Springs School District 11, said Wybrant is an innovator in education.

“Sean is an inspiration for us all, he does not allow obstacles to prevent him from doing what’s best for his students. His passion and persistence has allowed students from all backgrounds to be inspired, motivated and to achieve new heights.” Dr. Gledich said.

Wybrant has taught at William J. Palmer High School for the last four years and at Doherty High School prior to that. Outside the classroom he sponsors a girls-only technology club called Tech Chic, that brings together women of all ages, as well as a coed computer science club, a live musical performance club and runs a Career and Technical Education advisory board.
