ESSA Listening Tour to visit Thornton on Monday, May 23

Colorado education officials are visiting seven sites to gather feedback about how state should implement national education law

The Colorado Department of Education’s seven-city listening tour will make its last stop of the month on Monday, May 23, in Thornton to gather feedback on how the state should implement key areas of the nation’s new education law, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The new law that was passed by Congress in 2015 with bipartisan support reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replaces the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act, giving states more authority to chart their own courses.

The listening tour is an opportunity for the public to engage and help shape Colorado’s ESSA strategy. Sessions will include discussion about standards and assessments, accountability, supports for students and parents and community engagement.

The meetings are posing high-level questions, such as:

  • How should we set expectations for what students should know and be able to do?
  • How should we measure student progress toward meeting the standards?
  • How should we hold schools accountable for student outcomes?

Teams comprised of CDE staff will be on hand to give an overview of the education law and what is expected from Colorado before gathering feedback from the public. Thornton’s visit will be split into two sessions – one in the afternoon and another one in the evening. Educators, parents, community members, business owners are all encouraged to participate.

The Thornton visit will be Monday, May 23, at Adams 12 Facility Operations Conference Center, 1500 E. 128th Ave. from 1-4 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m.

To register for the session or for more information about the ESSA Listening Tour, visit http://www.cde.state.co.us/fedprograms/ESSA.

A webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, to provide more opportunities for public feedback. More sites are expected to be added to the tour in June. To schedule an interview or to talk to the communications staff about the tour, please call 303-866-2334.
