Chairwoman Neal resigns from State Board of Education

DENVER – Today, Colorado State Board of Education Chairwoman Marcia Neal announced her plans to step down from the state board.  In a letter to her colleagues, Neal notified the board that her resignation would be effective July 31, 2015.

Neal was elected chairwoman of the Colorado State Board of Education on Jan. 7, 2015.  She has served as a member of the board for the 3rd Congressional District since January 2009, and she began her second term on the board on Jan. 7, 2015.

Neal grew up on a ranch in Gunnison, Colo. She attended Gunnison schools and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Western State College. She has been a business owner of a bookstore, had a 21-year career in teaching, finishing at Grand Junction High School, where she taught U.S. history and world geography.

She was elected to her local board of education for Mesa County School District #51 in 1997 and served eight years. In that capacity she also served on the Colorado Association of School Boards’ Resolution Legislative Committee and was a consistent voice for educational reform.

Neal is a widow with three adult children and seven grandchildren, five of whom attended Colorado public schools, and two grandchildren who reside in Georgia who are home schooled.

Today’s announcement will trigger the creation of a Republican vacancy committee in the 3rd Congressional District which will select Neal’s replacement on the State Board of Education.  Neal indicated she anticipates that selection will be made by August.

The next time this state board position will be up for election is November 2016.

As a result of Neal’s departure, the State Board of Education will conduct its own election process for a new chair and vice chair at its Aug. 12, 2015 meeting at the state Department of Education’s headquarters, 201 E. Colfax in Denver.
