State Board Appoints Elliott Asp Interim Commissioner

Takes Action on Innovation Applications

The Colorado State Board of Education met for its regularly scheduled meeting on June 10.  Meeting highlights include:

The board appointed Dr. Elliott Asp, currently special assistant to the commissioner, as interim commissioner effective June 16, 2015.  Asp replaces Commissioner Robert Hammond who is retiring at the end of June.  Asp joined the department in November 2012 to provide advice and support to the commissioner on special projects in the areas of assessment, accountability, educator effectiveness, the Colorado Growth Model and policy. He previously worked for Cherry Creek School District as assistant superintendent for performance improvement and held a similar position in the Douglas County School District.

Action Taken on Requests for Innovation Schools and Zones
The state board approved the direction Aurora Public Schools is moving toward creating an innovation zone around a group of schools, including Aurora Central High School. The state board also directed CDE staff to review the district’s plan and prepare a recommendation for the board’s consideration at its August 2015 meeting.

The board also approved the innovation application submitted by Holyoke School District RE-1J for Holyoke Elementary School, Holyoke Jr/Sr High School and Holyoke Alternative School.  Innovation applications were also approved for Early College Academy in Greeley-Evans School District 6 and Place Bridge Academy in Denver Public Schools.

State Board Revokes Adams 50’s Chartering Authority
The state board voted to revoke Adams County School District No. 50’s exclusive chartering authority. The request for revocation was submitted by Crown Pointe Academy of Westminster. Crown Pointe Academy is the only charter school in the district.

Endorsement of Student-Centered Accountability Project
The board voted to endorse the Student-Centered Accountability Project developed by a collaboration of rural school districts working to develop and gain approval of an alternative accountability system.

Recognizing outstanding educators and students
The board recognized Red Hawk Elementary School in the St. Vrain Valley School District and Colorado State University for receiving the 2015 Green Ribbon Schools Award.  The U.S. Department of Education gives the Green Ribbon Schools Award to schools for exemplary achievements in sustainability, health and environmental education.

Colorado’s 2015 Presidential Scholars, Samuel Scheeres from Fairview High School and Andra Turner from Greeley West High School, were recognized and celebrated by the state board. The highly prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established over 50 years ago to recognize and honor the most distinguished graduating seniors across the nation. The 141 students chosen nationwide for this program have demonstrated tremendous accomplishments in many areas such as academic and artistic success, leadership, and involvement in the school and the community.
