1st Grade Standards and Instructional Support

First grade Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and standards-based resources can now be accessed from one page. Comprehensive Health Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 2. Physical and Personal Wellness

  1. Eating a variety of foods from the different food groups is vital to promote good health
  2. Demonstrate health enhancing behaviors to prevent unintentional injury or illness

Standard 3. Emotional and Social Wellness

  1. Demonstrate how to express emotions in healthy ways
  2. Identify parents, guardians, and other trusted adults as resources for information about health

Standard 4. Prevention and Risk Management

  1. Demonstrate strategies to avoid hazards in the home and community

Dance Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Movement, Technique, and Performance

  1. Perform movement phrases alone and with others
  2. Demonstrate the elements of dance (space, time, and energy) in movement phrases

Standard 2. Create, Compose and Choreograph

  1. Use the dance elements to create a simple movement phrase based on personal ideas and concepts from other sources
  2. Create a solo dance with changes in space or timing to reflect different feelings

Standard 3. Historical and Cultural Context

  1. Perform simple dances from various cultures
  2. All cultures around the world have unique dances

Standard 4. Reflect, Connect, and Respond

  1. Respond to different dance styles using basic stylistic vocabulary
  2. Display, discuss, and demonstrate appropriate etiquette at a dance performance

Drama and Theatre Arts Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Create

  1. Create characters and environments through dramatic play

Standard 2. Perform

  1. Retell a short story or scene through dramatic play

Mathematics Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Number Sense, Properties, and Operations

  1. The whole number system describes place value relationships within and beyond 100 and forms the foundation for efficient algorithms
  2. Number relationships can be used to solve addition and subtraction problems

Standard 3. Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability

  1. Visual displays of information can be used to answer questions

Standard 4. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relationships

  1. Shapes can be described by defining attributes and created by composing and decomposing
  2. Measurement is used to compare and order objects and events

Music Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Expression of Music

  1. Expressively perform in groups or independently
  2. Perform basic rhythmic and melodic patterns

Standard 2. Creation of Music

  1. Demonstrate creation of short, independent musical phrases and sounds alone and with others
  2. Identify musical patterns

Standard 3. Theory of Music

  1. Comprehension of gradual changes in dynamics and tempo
  2. Aurally identify components of musical form
  3. Comprehension of basic vocal and instrumental tone colors
  4. Comprehension of basic rhythmic and melodic patterns

Standard 4. Aesthetic Valuation of Music

  1. Demonstrate respect for the contributions of self and others in a musical setting
  2. Comprehension of basic components of music and musical performance at a beginning level
  3. Identify music as an integral part of everyday life

Standard 1. Movement Competence and Understanding

  1. Demonstrate basic locomotor and nonlocomotor skills, and rhythmic and cross-lateral movements
  2. Demonstrate fundamental manipulative skills
  3. Establish a beginning movement vocabulary

Standard 2. Physical and Personal Wellness

  1. Identify the body’s normal reactions to moderate and vigorous physical activity

Standard 3. Emotional and Social Wellness

  1. Work independently and with others to complete work
  2. Follow the rules of an activity

Standard 4. Prevention and Risk Management

  1. Develop movement control for safe participation in games and sports

Reading, Writing, and Communicating Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Oral Expression and Listening

  1. Multiple strategies develop and expand oral vocabulary
  2. Verbal and nonverbal language is used to express and receive information
  3. Identifying and manipulating phonemes in spoken words allow people to understand the meaning of speech

Standard 2. Reading for All Purposes

  1. Comprehending and fluently reading a variety of literary texts are the beginning traits of readers
  2. Comprehending and fluently reading a variety of informational texts are the beginning traits of readers
  3. Decoding words require the application of alphabetic principles, letter sounds, and letter combinations
  4. Understanding word structure, word relationships, and word families needs to be demonstrated to begin to read

Standard 3. Writing and Composition

  1. Exploring the writing process develops ideas for writing texts that carry meaning
  2. Appropriate spelling, conventions, and grammar are applied when writing

Standard 4. Research and Reasoning

  1. A variety of resources leads to locating information and answering questions of interest
  2. Purpose, information, and questions about an issue are essential steps in early research

Science Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Physical Science

  1. Solids and liquids have unique properties that distinguish them

Standard 2. Life Science

  1. Offspring have characteristics that are similar to but not exactly like their parents’ characteristics
  2. An organism is a living thing that has physical characteristics to help it survive

Standard 3. Earth Systems Science

  1. Earth’s materials can be compared and classified based on their properties

Social Studies Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. History

  1. Describe patterns and chronological order of events of the recent past
  2. Family and cultural traditions in the United States in the past

Standard 2. Geography

  1. Geographic tools such as maps and globes to represent places
  2. People in different groups and communities interact with each other and the environment

Standard 3. Economics

  1. People work at different types of jobs and in different types of organizations in order to produce goods and services and receive an income
  2. Identify short term financial goals (PFL)

Standard 4. Civics

  1. Effective groups have responsible leaders and team members
  2. Notable people, places, holidays and patriotic symbols
