News Release - Four Colorado Schools Awarded 2014 Blue Ribbon Schools

Oct. 1, 2014

Four Colorado schools awarded 2014 Blue Ribbon Schools

Commissioner of Education Robert Hammond today congratulated four Colorado schools named by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as 2014 Blue Ribbon Schools.

"These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education—that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments," Secretary Duncan said. "National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching every student."

The schools are Cougar Run Elementary School in Highlands Ranch (Douglas County School District), Elk Creek Elementary School in New Castle (Garfield RE-2), Homestead Elementary School in Centennial (Cherry Creek Schools) and Kruse Elementary School in Fort Collins (Poudre School District).

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students’ levels of achievement.

The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories. The first category is Exemplary High Performing, in which schools are recognized among their state’s highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests. The second category is Exemplary Improving, in which schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds demonstrate the most progress in improving student achievement levels as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests.

In all, 337 schools were recognized as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.  View a complete list.
