Step 1 - Identify Priorities

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans form the basis for federal policy related to nutrition and diet. The guidelines are based on a preponderance of the best scientific research in promoting health and reducing chronic diseases risk through diet and physical activity. For these reasons, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans form the basis for the nutrition concepts identified in this nutrition education curriculum planning process.

It is highly unlikely that any school district has the time and resources to address all of the learner outcomes in the Nutrition Literacy Toolkit. The purpose for setting priorities is to help focus nutrition education in order to maximize the limited amount of time available by focusing on the most prevalent nutrition issues in the local community.

Select one or more grade grouping(s). (Required)

Select from the following grade groupings (Pre K-4, 5-8 or 9-12). You must select a grade grouping to proceed to the next step. You may repeat the process and select a different grade grouping.

Grade: Pre K-4
5-8

Select the county where your school district is located. (optional)

Select a county:

Select one or more priority population(s).
(optional)

Scientific research shows there are definite nutrition-related problems for specific ethnic groups, socioeconomic status, and youth. Use the current health statistics provided and any local needs assessments available to select one or more priority population(s). If more than 30% of the students are on free and reduced price lunch, a low socioeconomic population exists in your school district and should be selected as a priority population.

[Check your district’s Free and Reduced statistics here]

Selecting specific priority populations will limit the nutrition concepts in your curriculum to the health needs most pertinent to your students.

If no priority population is selected, all nutrition concepts will be available for consideration.
