email Libdobrich@hotmail.comThe Dora Gabe Regional Library is the largest library in the region of Dobrich. It is a cultural institution of regional importance. For 50 years the library has been one of the important intellectual centers of the district, archive of the regional editions, and center of reference-bibliographic and information activity for the region. It is a public library with free access for all readers. The library is a regional coordination center in library service. With its multiple functions it has become the main scientific-information and educational center of the region. It is a part of the unlimited information society. At the end of the 20 century and on the brink of the new millennium the mission of the library is defined by the motto, "The erudition is freedom."
History:
- 1947 - The secretary of the Regional Union of the library clubs made a proposal for the foundation of a public library in Dobrich.
- 1948 - 1949 - The beginning of the book collection.
- 1950 - The new library started work in the building of the city library club. This year is considered to be the beginning of the library. It is founded as Dobrich City Library. It developed into a cultural and educational institute
- 1952 - The library received its first building, officially opened.
- 1959 - The library is licensed as the Chief Library in the system of libraries in the Dobrich region. It became District one.
- 1960 - The library initiates reform - free access for the readers.
- 1961 - The library arranged the department "Reference bibliographic services"
- 1968 - The library became a center of reference bibliographic and information activity for the region.
- 1983 - The library started a new model for services of children. The children's department is settled in a new building.
- 1985 - The "Art" sector is opened.
- 1988 - Beginning of the first project for the automation of library process, on the basis of CDS/ISIS . Now it has a local network. The LAN is running under the Novell operating system. - The library became a Universal Scientific one.
- 1992 - The library received its present building.
- 1996 - The library became a Regional one.
- 1998 - The library is named after the celebrated Bulgarian poetess Dora Gabe.

Structure and Organization of the Collections The structure of the holdings are mixed. There is free access to the collections in the Lending Rooms and the Reading Rooms. The readers can use the collections in the main book-stacks only in the Reading rooms. The library has a collection of 350,000 books, periodicals, patents and standards, printed music editions, graphic editions, paintings, records, disks, maps, films, and microfilms. The Interlibrary Lending Service satisfies the public needs of literature and periodicals, available in the funds of the big national depositories.
