Supplemental Educational Services
As part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, any school that is in its second year of School Improvement or on Corrective Action must offer supplemental educational services to eligible children in the school from a provider approved by the Colorado Department of Education and selected by the parents [Section 1116(e)(1)].
Supplemental educational services is free tutoring offered outside of the regular school day and designed to increase the academic achievement of low-income students in low-performing schools. These services may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions. Supplemental educational services must be high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement. Any service provided will be paid for by the school district.
The main purpose of supplemental educational services is to:
- increase the academic achievement in reading/language arts or mathematics of eligible students as measured by the State's assessment system and;
- enable these children to attain proficiency in meeting the State academic achievement standards.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP)
The purpose of the Request for Proposals (RFP) process is to select the providers of Supplemental Educational Services that will be included on the Approved Supplemental Services Provider (ASSP) list for Colorado. This is not a competitive grant in that as many providers can be included in the ASSP list as meet the criteria specified below. The list will be maintained by the Colorado Department of Education and will indicate which of the approved providers offer supplemental educational services in each school district.
The new Supplemental Educational Services RFP is now available for the 2010-2011 school year. Please note: Districts on NCLB Improvement may submit an application to become a SES provider if the criteria set forth by the USDE are met and can receive conditional approval. Proposals will be due on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.
