On May 31, 2016, the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) released a Notice of Proposed Rule-making on accountability and state plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which was open for public comment until August 1, 2016. Colorado Department of Education (CDE) recently submitted comments on the proposed rules. CDE's comments can be viewed here.
In a July 27 letter sent to U.S. Education Secretary John King, Colorado’s interim education Commissioner Katy Anthes said that while the state appreciates the flexibility afforded to states in the ESSA statute, there is concern that some of the proposed rules could impede Colorado’s “ability to develop and implement a plan that is in the best interest of Colorado students, families, schools and LEAs.”
