Program Description

Weld RE3J has designed five modules for teachers to expand their learning in Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and English language development (ELD). Four of the modules are based on the WIDA Climbs Institute which include: Culture Language and Learning Academic Language Academic Language Development in Classrooms Learning and Scaffolding Strategies The fifth module is a collaborative book study of “Common Core Standards in Diverse Classrooms: Essential Practices for Developing Academic Language and Disciplinary Literacy” (Zwiers, O'Hara, Pritchard. 2015. Stenhouse Publishers.). The module is a concise how-to guide to incorporate seven research-based teaching practices for developing complex language and literacy skills across the grade levels and disciplines. The module includes Classroom activities based on the practices Classroom examples from lessons in different grade levels and disciplines Detailed lessons with annotations focused on language and literacy development Strategies and tools for building system-wide capacity for sustained growth in the practices. All modules are followed up with teams engaged in collaborative planning throughout the school year. The instructor and other participants provide feedback during post-implementation reflections and walk-throughs or video observations.
