Patron Handbook
Magazines
Over 70 titles are available in cassette or Braille from NLS free of charge.
Patrons can receive magazines for example: Sports Illustrated, U.S. News and World Report,
National Geographic, or Foreign Affairs. For a subscription fee, there are many more titles
available from private publishers in various formats.
Readers Digest and Newsweek are also available free of charge. However, after one year you will
receive a renewal form in a separate envelope and you must return the renewal form for the magazine
to continue. The publisher suggests a fee for the subscription but paying this fee is optional.
For the titles that NLS provides you can call CTBL to order or email your requests to us.
The Guidepost can be requested through CTBL.
For a listing and description of all the magazines available on cassette, Braille, or large print
refer to the list available on our website or go to http://www.loc.gov/nls/reference/circulars/magprog.html and follow the link for Magazines in Special Media (year). There you will see what titles NLS
provides free of charge in Part 1 and the titles that are available from publishers for a fee in
Part 2.
Except for those recorded by CTBL, magazines come to the client directly from the producer on an
interval basis. Subscriptions usually take between 6–8 weeks to initiate or change an address.
During 2012 NLS will transition the magazine program from cassette to cartridge. When that occurs,
more information will be sent out.
