Colorado Early Learning Guidelines and Preschool Academic Standards

Early Learning and Development Guidelines

Colorado’s Early Learning and Development Guidelines are the result of a partnership between the Colorado Department of Education, the Colorado Early Childhood Leadership Commission, and Colorado Head Start and provide a common framework for understanding the continuum of development of children from birth through age eight. These Guidelines are aligned with and complement the Colorado Academic Standards for preschool through third grade and with the Head Start Child Development and Early Learning Framework.

The Colorado P-12 Academic Standards include preschool content for the first time. They were adopted by Colorado school districts on December 2011. For more guidance on standards implementation, please see the Unit of Assessment Standards Implementation page. The rest of the online searchable standards are located in their own database.

Colorado Preschool Academic Standards Support

While the Early Learning and Development Guidelines are your main source to inform practice, Colorado Preschool Program staff developed additional support documents to help link the new Colorado preschool academic standards with the early childhood best practices that are already present in high quality early childhood care and education settings.
