First Grade Content Connection Sample: Personal Communication

Personal communication is the ability to appropriately express one’s thoughts, feelings, and ideas to others. First graders are working on the fundamentals of communication through nonlinguistic and linguistic representations. First graders are building lifelong skills that employ literacy strategies that include the foundations of reading, writing, listening and speaking in order to be understood.
Personal Communication can connect all 10 content areas as detailed below.

Comprehensive Health and Physical Education

In comprehensive health and physical education, personal communication involves expressing emotions in healthy ways. Physiological and physical awareness, information processing, problem-solving, and receptive and expressive forms of communication are all parts of personal communication skills. Mastery of emotional expression is a lifelong skill that is utilized at school, home, work and in the community in order to develop healthy and productive relationships while maintaining individual emotional wellness.

Dance

In dance, personal communication is visible in nonlinguistic expressions of movement. Dance uses body movement to express the stories of others; it can act as form of storytelling. Symbols are also used to communicate types of movements to learners.

Drama and Theatre Arts

In drama and theatre arts, personal communication is both linguistic and nonlinguistic through facial expressions, movement and voice. Theatre provides learners many avenues to creatively express and communicate how they are feeling and what they are thinking in order to successfully interact with the world around them.

Mathematics

In mathematics, personal communication is developed through linguistic and nonlinguistic representations. For example, drawings can be used to communicate ideas not easily conveyed in words. First graders communicate in words, concrete objects, symbols and drawings to express mathematical ideas.

Music

In music, personal communication involves expressing mood and feeling. Communicating moods or feelings and demonstrating focused listening can be difficult through vocabulary. Insights into a first grader’s complex feelings may be communicated through musical interpretation. Learning to communicate through music can lead to applications such as connecting music to movies and marketing.

Reading, Writing, and Communicating

In reading, writing and communicating, personal communication is achieved by expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas in an effective manner using linguistic and nonlinguistic representation. First graders use specific words, inflection, and sentence fluency to make personal presentations interesting and understandable. Students express opinion using clear organization, spelling, conventions, and grammar.

Science

In science, personal communication requires effectively conveying scientific ideas and the evidence for those ideas. Students learn to emulate the ways scientists use communication, such as recording ideas, thoughts, hypotheses, data, and conclusions as well as the sharing ideas, data, results, and conclusions.

Social Studies

In social studies, personal communication is necessary for students to express their perspective on issues, ideas and events. In history, students communicate their perspectives and understanding. In geography, students express their spatial thinking about how humans interact with the environment. Civics provides the structure for students to learn how to communicate their opinions, ideas, questions and findings effectively and respectfully. Personal communication is an essential concept for the success of students in society.

Visual Arts

In visual arts, personal communication is using art to express feelings and responding to works of art. Using a work of art to describe how it makes someone feel and creating a picture to describe one’s own feelings are all foundational communication skills.

World Languages

In world languages, personal communication occurs when simple questions about familiar topics and responses to questions seeking basic clarification are used. At this level, simple commands are also used. Understanding basic questions and commands in different languages builds global connections.
