Dig Into Reading at your local library
Reading and math summer programs aim
to keep children learning this summer
Colorado Commissioner of Education Robert Hammond and the Colorado State Library are urging educators and families to help students retain and develop academic skills by reading and practicing math skills during summer vacation. For Colorado's students, summer is a time of fun, but those months away from school can result in a loss of knowledge and reading ability. Summer reading and math programs include additional offerings to keep students engaged and excited about learning.
“Reading and mathematics are foundational skills our students need to be productive, successful citizens,” said Gene Hainer, assistant commissioner of the State Library. “Participation in these programs will help students retain and develop academic skills, so they are well-prepared to return to school in the fall.”
Public libraries across Colorado will encourage children, teens, and adults to read this summer through Dig Into Reading, this year’s summer reading program. The program invites people of all ages to explore everything underground while reading, attending fun events and engaging in activities like making your own fossils. Visit your local public library for more information and to register for the free program.
In addition to the summer reading program at public libraries, Find a Book Colorado is a tool that enables students and parents to create personalized reading lists to match a reader with books that interest them and provide the right level of challenge to support reading growth. It includes books for children in grades K-12 and books in Spanish. Parents can access Find a Book Colorado online from home.
New this year, is the Summer Math Challenge, a program that helps prevent summer math loss for students entering grades 3-6. Once signed up, parents can get daily emails with fun activities and resources. The program begins on Monday, June 24 and runs for six weeks. Enroll at quantiles.com/accounts/registration/.
