The Colorado
Department of Education announced today the
statewide PreK-12 pupil count for the 2012-2013
school year increased by 9,296 over the previous
year, bringing the total to 863,561 public
school students. This number represents the
total number of students served.
The change
represents an increase of 1.1 percent, slightly
lower than the growth rate in the 2010-2011
school year, which was 1.3 percent. In
2008-2009, enrollment surged 2 percent, the
largest increase in recent history.
The largest 15
districts and their current student enrollment
are: Jeffco Public Schools (85,508 students),
Denver Public Schools (83,377), Douglas County
Schools (64,657), Cherry Creek Schools (53,368),
Adams 12 Five Star Schools (43,268), Aurora
Public Schools (39,835), Boulder Valley School
District (30,041), St. Vrain Valley School
District (29,382), Colorado Springs School
District 11 (28,993), Poudre School District
(27,909), Academy School District 20 (23,973),
Mesa County Valley School District 51 (21,730),
Greeley-Evans School District 6 (19,821), Pueblo
City Schools (17,692) and Brighton School
District 27J (16,163).
These 15 school
districts represent 67.8 percent (585,717
students) of the total statewide enrollment.
On the other end of
the size spectrum, 134 of Colorado’s 183 local
education agencies have an enrollment of fewer
than 2,000 students. These 134 agencies enrolled
8.1 percent of the total number of students in
the state in 2012. Of these, 108 enrolled fewer
than 1,000 students. These 108 local education
agencies enrolled 4.1 percent of the total
number of students in the state in 2012.
Race and Ethnicity
Data
Among ethnic groups,
students identified as two or more races
increased by 8.3 percent from 26,073 students in
2011 to 28,238 students in 2012. Students
identified as American Indian decreased by 6
percent from 7,143 students in 2011 to 6,716
students in 2012. All other race and ethnicity
changes were less than 3 percent when compared
to the prior year.
Fast-Growing
Districts
Julesburg RE-1
School District saw the largest percentage
increase, gaining 266 students (most of which
were online students), representing a 30 percent
increase from 2012-2013. The Charter School
Institute continues to grow with an 11.9 percent
increase in student population.
Denver Public
Schools had the largest number of student gains
by adding 2,487 students − a 3.1 percent
increase for the district. Douglas County, St.
Vrain Valley, and the Charter School Institute
also had significant increases, each increasing
more than 1,000 students as compared to the
prior school year.
District Decreases
The largest decrease
in total student population was in Colorado
Springs School District 11 with a decrease of
516 students, representing 1.8 percent of the
student population from the prior year.
Pritchett went from 76 to 47 students
representing a percent loss of 38.2 Karval went
from 194 to 122 students representing a percent
loss of 37.1.
Online Enrollment
The 2012-2013
enrollment totals include 16,638 students
registered to online educational programs. That
total is 1.9 percent of all students.
The current
enrollment reflects a 2.6 percent increase from
2011-2012, when there were 16,221 students in
online programs. |
