21st Century Community Learning Center Grants expand after-school programs, extend learning opportunities

34 grants awarded to more than 60 schools in Colorado

The Colorado Department of Education announced today the award of $7.8 million in grants through the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Program.

In all, 34 grants were awarded to more than 60 schools throughout Colorado. Each site can be funded up to $150,000. Subgrantees include 18 school districts, five community based organizations, one university, and three charter schools which will provide students extended learning time before and after-school through academic programs and opportunities for enrichment activities.

The dollars support intensive tutoring programs, summer enrichment, STEM education, after-school clubs and many other activities to boost student success. The grants also support programs geared to increase parental involvement and adult education, including English language classes and parenting workshops.

Funding for these programs begin this month and continue for a five year period subject to annual appropriation by the U.S. Department of Education.
