CDE recognizes Districts Accredited with Distinction, Centers of Excellence schools and other award winners

The Colorado Department of Education celebrated the 2011 district and school performance results in an awards ceremony on Monday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Colorado Department of Education lobby at 201 E. Colfax Ave., Denver. Commissioner Robert Hammond honored schools and districts that earned acclaim in four award categories.

The event recognized the 18 districts Accredited with Distinction under the state’s accountability system. See the Dec. 7 news release for more detail: http://bit.ly/scXtAH.

The event also recognized the recipients of the 2011 Centers of Excellence award. Established by the Colorado State Legislature, the Centers of Excellence award recognizes schools that demonstrate the highest rates of student longitudinal growth as measured by the Colorado Growth Model among those that have at least 75 percent at-risk students. For a list of the 2011 winners, visit http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeawards/ctrsofexcellence.htm

Also garnering honors were those schools that earned the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement award and John Irwin Schools of Excellence award. The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement awards are given to schools that demonstrate excellent student growth. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools “exceed” expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth and “meet or exceed” expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps. In 2011, 162 schools earned this award.

The John Irwin awards are given to schools that demonstrate excellent academic achievement. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools “exceed” expectations on the academic achievement indicator and “meet or exceed” expectations on the academic growth gaps indicator. In 2011, 150 schools earned this award.
