“TELL” Survey Data Released Today; Almost 30,000 Educators Participated
Results from the Colorado Teaching, Empowering, Leading & Learning Survey are available today at http://www.tellcolorado.org/. TELL Colorado is a statewide survey of school-based educators to assess teaching conditions at the school, district and state level.
Launched in January 2011, the survey asked all teachers and principals in Colorado schools about the teaching and learning conditions in their schools. Research shows that there is a relationship between these conditions and student achievement. The intent of the survey is to provide schools and districts with valuable information to support school and district improvement planning.
Almost 30,000 educators participated in the 2011 survey, representing 47 percent of the educator workforce. That’s a marked increase from the 36 percent participation rate in 2009. Beginning today, individual school data is available for those individual schools with a participation rate of at least 50 percent. A recorded webinar, implementation guides and more resources are available for schools and districts to assist in interpreting their data.
An initial report on state level findings will be released in early May after the findings are presented to the Colorado State Board of Education at the May state board meeting.
The successful first statewide administration of the TELL Colorado Survey in 2009 led the State Board of Education to pass a resolution in May, 2010 regarding CDE efforts to improve and support Colorado educators.
The survey was authorized by House Bill 08-1384, which called for the Colorado Department of Education to conduct a biennial survey of teaching and learning conditions. The bill stated that “these conditions must be systematically studied and addressed for Colorado to develop a critical mass of teachers who are well prepared to teach and who will remain in the hardest-to-staff schools long enough to make a significant difference for students and their families.”
The initiative is being managed by a partnership led by CDE. The partnership included the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper, the Colorado Education Association (CEA), the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) and the Colorado League of Charter Schools. The Colorado Department of Education contracted with the New Teacher Center, a non-profit based in Santa Cruz, Calif., to administer the survey, manage the data and provide the analysis for the state level reports.
