State Board of Education Member Pam Mazanec resigns

DENVER - Today, Colorado State Board of Education Member Pam Mazanec announced her plans to step down from the board. In a letter to Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams, Mazanec said her resignation would be effective Jan. 31, 2018.

Mazanec, who represents Colorado’s 4th Congressional District and lives in Larkspur, began serving on the board on Jan. 9, 2013. Born and raised in Colby, Kansas, she graduated from Wichita State University before becoming a legal assistant in Kansas and Colorado. Together with her husband Leon, Mazanec has been a small business owner for more than 15 years.

“Serving in this role has truly been an honor and a privilege,” Mazanec said. “I thank the people of Colorado, all my colleagues on the board, past and present, Commissioner Anthes, all the staff at CDE, and everyone committed to excellent education for Colorado’s students. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve.”

Her passion for education began during her experience serving as PTO president and volunteering in the classroom and in sports booster clubs during her children’s years in Douglas County School District. She currently serves as a director of Great Choice Douglas County, a non-profit organization supporting school choice.

“We are grateful for Ms. Mazanec’s service,” said Colorado Education Commissioner Katy Anthes. “She has been a champion for rural districts and innovative school practices as well as a fierce advocate for parent engagement in their student’s education.  She always pushed our thinking and we are grateful for her unwavering service to CDE and the students of Colorado.  She will be missed.”

Today’s announcement will trigger the creation of a Republican vacancy committee in the 4th Congressional District which will select Mazanec’s replacement on the State Board of Education.

The next time this state board position will be up for election is November 2018.
